Eric Hefty Obituary

Eric Warren Hefty

Eric Warren Hefty, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and brother, left this world on Saturday, January 15. He was 77 years old.

Born in Great Falls, Montana, on August 29, 1944, Eric spent most of his working life in Missoula, Montana, where he raised three children with his wife Cheryl, to whom he was married and devoted for 53 years. Eric was founder and principal of Eric Hefty & Associates, an award-winning design firm he led for nearly 50 years. After graduating from Missoula County High School in 1962, Eric attended Montana State University in Bozeman, where he studied architecture, was track "Man of the Year" and held several university and conference hurdle records, and was a member of the SAE fraternity.

It was at MSU that he also met his future wife, Cheryl. Upon graduation they moved to the San Francisco Bay area where Eric apprenticed with what would become leading firms in the region. Eric and Cheryl always regarded with fondness their time in that unique '60s cultural milieu and epoch. After moving back to Missoula in 1973, Eric was for many years a board member at Valley Christian School and an elder of the Missoula Alliance Church.

Eric was passionate about western Montana and the beauty of the natural world. The Missoula Valley is filled with buildings that manifest his spirit and talent. His last and signature project was The Corner at the intersection of Higgins and Brooks, a work for which he was simultaneously architect, construction manager, and developer. He brought the project to completion against enormous odds, surpassed only by the delight he took in the project.

Eric found great joy in design. It was the language he spoke – and it would be impossible to understand him without understanding that. It would also be impossible to share the joy he felt when immersed in the creative process, without recognizing that he experienced that joy as praise to God and as profound respect for the unspeakable wonder of His creation.

Eric was a man of faith and great personal and professional integrity. He was humble, kind, generous, lighthearted, funny, forgiving, and selfless. He was graced with rare and quiet wisdom gleaned from daily contemplation of Scripture, attention to aesthetic beauty, and a simple love of God. His family is forever grateful for everything he was and everything he has given us

He is survived by his wife, Cheryl; son Nels, of Los Angeles; son Karl, daughter-in-law Victoria and their children Katelle and Vita of Ottawa, Canada; daughter, Erica, son-in-law Rich, and their children Soren, Arlen, and Elsie, of Hamilton, Montana; his sister Gwen Sebestin and her son Damon, of Missoula; and his brother Marc, of Henderson, Nevada.

A celebration-of-life service will be held at 11:00am on Monday, January 24, at Missoula Alliance Church. Memorials can be made to the Missoula Alliance Church benevolent fund.

My heart is broken for the Hefty family. Eric was a giant among men. I am not sure if it was his humility, his kindness or his design talent that was greatest. Eric was the best boss I have ever had. He inspired me to pursue my Architecture degree at MSU and supported me when I left his employ to do so. After my years of schooling and practice, I can reflect on the fact that Eric showed me what it meant to be an architect and I have him t than for my career. He will be greatly missed. My thoughts go out to Cheryle, Nels, Karl and Erica.

Nels Hefty just shared the news with me of Eric's passing. He was a great boss, my first boss after I graduated from architecture school. I pray a blessing on his family and legacy: May the LORD bless you and keep you, make His face to shine on you and be gracious to you; may the LORD look upon you with favor and may He give you His peace. Amen

I am sorry for your loss.

I have had the great privilege of knowing Mr. Eric Hefty. Mr. Hefty was a remarkable man, who lived a dignified life. A man of conviction who faithfully lived his beliefs.

Mr. Hefty was a role model, who was held in high esteem, someone I deeply respected and admired, and who perfectly embodied the values of service, integrity, and excellence.

My thoughts and prayers are with the Hefty family as we celebrate Eric´s life and legacy of excellence. We share in your grief. God bless you all.

My deepest sympathy and condolences to the Hefty family. Eric was an extremely kind man that I had the opportunity to work for at Hefty & Associates. He was thoughtful, compassionate about architecture and his faith in Jesus was evident in everything he did! Our family spent many Sunday afternoons together growing up sharing life together with Cheryl, Nels, Karl and Erica, as well as time at VCS. His gentle spirit and joyful soul touched many and he will be missed. Go forth faithful servant - you have touched so many!

Mr. Eric Hefty was a blessing to me in my life. Over the years the Shelby family have loved each Hefty family member. Eric was the first person I ever spoke to when we started at Valley Christian school along with Mr Earl Reimer. I will always remember the first prayer we had together, it was so special. Eric was such a gentleman, and lovely Spirit filled man of God. I agree with the humility aspect of this very elegant description of him. I am sad to say good bye to this spectacular person, but I am happy with the fact that I know he is with Jesus. Orsi and I extend Love in Christ to Mrs. Hefty and the entire family. You are all so special; we will pray for your strength.

I can´t think of words to really express our ( Michele and I) sorrow and grief to see Eric´s passing. As a professional competitor I always recognized Eric´s passion for the Architectural profession and commitment to the Missoula community. Our hearts are with his family. May God bless you all.
