Harold "Chatty" Dodd Jr., age 82, of Swiss Pine Lake Drive in Spruce Pine, passed away at his home after a battle with cancer on Friday, Oct. 31, 2025.
He was born on Feb. 21, 1943, in Chatham County, Georgia. He was the son of the late Harold Dodd Sr. and the late Charlotte Segars Dodd. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his second wife, Gail Dodd.
Dodd began working during his high school years helping his mother carry the financial burdens of the family. Right before he turned 20, he joined the Air Force where he served as an air policeman and with the canine unit. Dodd was known for loving and being great with dogs. Moving on from the Air Force, Dodd worked and began many successful businesses. Lastly, he worked for the Department of the Navy at both the Charleston Naval Shipyard and the Norfolk Naval Shipyard. He received many performance awards while employed at the shipyards in recognition and appreciation of his high-level performance.
Dodd was a member of Spruce Pine First Baptist Church. He was known for his servant's heart, and he always had a desire to help others with any skills and knowledge he had attained throughout his life. Following that desire, he served with the North Carolina Baptists on Mission in the area of disaster relief. He even rose to the level of a Blue Hat. But his love was interacting with the people in need and carrying out the hard work needed in each foreign or domestic disaster. Wanting others to come to faith in Christ, he also served as a Gideon sharing copies of God's word and his testimony. Earlier in his life, he joined the Shriners. His life was a reflection of his love for people, always serving in any way he could.
Left to cherish his memories are his wife, Connie Taylor Dodd; his daughters, Amanda and Kelly; his son, David and his wife Melanie; his brother, Johnny and his wife Rosalyn; his four grandchildren, Ricky, Dakota, Matthew and Justin; and five great grandchildren.
A memorial service was held at Spruce Pine First Baptist Church on Saturday, Nov. 15 at 3 p.m. with the Rev. Rocky Branch officiating. The family received friends one hour prior to the service at the church from 2 - 3 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to North Carolina Baptists on Mission, Spruce Pine First Baptist Church, (125 W. Tappan St.,
