Velma Poteat Obituary

Greenville – Velma June Vogler Poteat passed peacefully on Sept. 2, 2025.
She was born March 2, 1930, in Portland, Ore. to Fred and Lillian Dilley Vogler. She was raised in Oregon and Washington states. She worked as a social worker in San Francisco prior to her marriage. On Aug. 14, 1955, she married Laurence Ernest Poteat, a native of Bakersville, N.C. Laurence died in 1993 in Miami, Fla. She moved to Greenville, S.C. in 1994 to be near her daughters and grandchildren.
Velma is survived by her daughters Laura (Doug) Slagh of Greer, S.C. and Amy (Steve) Ferguson of Mooresville, N.C.; her grandchildren, Lisa Slagh (Mike) Reinke, Jimmy Slagh, Kevin Slagh, Andrew Slagh, Ben Ferguson, Matt Ferguson and Cailee Ferguson (Raj Polureddy); and two great-granddaughters, Joanna and Makenna Reinke. She is also survived by a sister, VaLee Vogler Hess of San Jose, Calif.
She was an avid vegetable and flower gardener. Velma loved visiting flower gardens with her family. In her younger years she enjoyed volunteering with many different organizations, especially Girl Scouts.
Burial will be in the Bakersville Memorial Cemetery. A private family memorial service will be held at a later date.
