Allen Powell Obituary

Allen Walter Powell
"Big Al"

May 17, 1951-August 10, 2019
Allen Walter Powell, 68, of Modesto, passed away surrounded by his family at his home on August 10, 2019, after a long illness. Al was born in Turlock, CA on May 17, 1951. Al met Eloise Garcia in 1967. After their first date, they were inseparable. Al would drive his 1968 Camaro from Turlock to Ceres where he would pick Eloise up and head to cruise McHenry. Al graduated from Turlock High School in 1969 and married Eloise in 1972.
Al began is career with the Modesto Police Department in the mid 70's. He absolutely loved everything about working for MPD. He retired from the department in 2010.
Al loved to golf, play the lottery and play poker! He was well known for buying and selling all kinds of things! He always had a smile on his face and there weren't many he encountered who didn't consider him a friend.
Al's biggest joy in his life was being "Papa" to his five grandkids. He always had a big smile on his face when his girls came to visit. He never missed a baseball or basketball game if his boys were playing. His face lit up while watching them, he really was their biggest fan...they miss him so much.
Al loved his SF 49ers and SF Giants. His enthusiasm cheering on the 9ers will forever be missed. He will forever be missed, our hearts are broken.
Al is survived by his wife, Eloise. His daughter, Becci Hodge and son-in-law, Les. His son Josh and daughter-in-law, Lisa. His five grandkids, Trey, Deven and Jaiden Hodge and Madilyn and Jocelyn Powell. He is also survived by his mother-in-law, Rebecca Cobos.
Services will be held at Salas Brothers in Modesto, CA on August 24, 2019 at 1PM.

I've known you, Al, and Eloise for a lot of years and I know we didn't see a lot of each other, but I always knew you were both a great family along with your children and now I see grandchildren. I always loved working with Al at MPD because he was very level headed and was always very respectful to people and we had the same basic way of handling people and calls for service. I remember getting Bronchitis while we were in our CSO class about a year after we were hired. I was so sick I could barely stay in the chair and the person that was running the class informed me I couldn't go home no matter what because I needed to be in class every day. I remember running down the hall to the restroom to either get sick or cry and probably both. I went back to the class and Al came to the rescue. He told the instructor, "can't you see she's sick and she needs to go home and or go to a doctor, so please let her go home". The instructor gave in and I was always so very glad and I thanked Al for stepping in. Al was always such a good, honest person and there was nothing to dislike about him. May you rest in peace, Al, and I am still having trouble believing you're not still here with us. Ellie, I am so very sorry for your loss of Al and I know how very close you and Al were and I am so sorry. If we were in California I would come to see you and give you a big hug. Lynn and I both send our condolences and prayers for Ellie and the family to get through these hards times. Love you always, Ellie.

Allen... I just wanted to thank you for always putting up with me when I would come to visit, stay longer than you probably liked, but you were always so sweet to me. Going to miss you taking us cruise around Modesto listening to oldies. Going to miss our love scratchers. I love that you were the only one that could pick me up and crack my back. Thank you for giving me the best laugh I ever had in my whole life On trip to Monterey. I laughed for days, and every time I think of it I always laugh! I love you and I'm truly going to miss you and just know I will always be there for Eloise .
