Nortonville, Kansas - Charles Elvin Niemann, eldest son of the late Elvin & Esther Niemann family from Nortonville, Kansas, passed away on March 4, 2022. He was 85.
Charles was born in Atchison, Kansas on December 24,1936. He grew up on a farm in Nortonville, Kansas and in 1953 the family moved to Topeka. He graduated from Topeka High School in 1954 and earned a BBA from Washburn University in 1959. His last semester was spent at the University of Hawaii. He joined the US Army at Schofield Barracks in Hawaii for six months active duty and was in the army reserves. Charles received a Bachelor of Foreign Trade from Thunderbird School for Global Management in Arizona.
Charles started his overseas work in Iran in 1962 as a Field Representative with CARE. 1965 promoted as CARE Assistant Country Director, Guatamala. 1968 promoted to CARE Country Director, Panama (where he met and married his wife Ingrid of Modesto, CA). 1971 CARE Director in Quito, Ecuador and 1974 CARE Director in Amman, Jordan. Mother Teresa paid a visit to thank Charles for all the CARE food programs in Amman. Charles personally escorted her around to locations in Amman where CARE provided food commodities. Mid-1976 the family moved to New Delhi, India where he finished his career with CARE. There were also various trips to Modesto, CA, Kansas and Scandinavia during his time abroad.
Charles and family moved to Modesto, CA in late 1976. He was a Travel Consultant and later a Travel Agency Manager with Vintage World Travel, Marker Travel and Uniglobe Travel. Just prior to moving to Missouri, Charles served as Lt. Governor for Kiwanis in the Modesto area. Also an active member of Emanuel Lutheran Church in Modesto. Charles and Ingrid retired to The Lake of the Ozarks, MO in 2002. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club of Camdenton and the Rotary Club of Laurie.
Charles is survived by his wife Nancy Ingrid Niemann (52 years married), of Camdenton, MO, and three children, Erik Niemann of Fresno, Erika Skovron (Joe) of Seattle and Karl Niemann of Modesto. Grandchildren, Parker & Paige Niemann and Joe & Danny Skovron. Siblings include William (Mary Ann), Eric (Lois) Niemann, Emily (Melvin) Nolting all of Nortonville, KS, and Arliss Zimmerman (Roy) of North Ogden, UT.
Celebration of Life and Memorial Service will be held at Kent Memorial Lutheran Church, Sunrise Beach, MO on Saturday, March 12, 2022 11:00 AM. Family greeting and visitation at 10:00 AM. Inurnment at the Kent Memorial Columbarium. Luncheon to follow. Memorial donations may be made to the Kent Memorial Lutheran Church. Arrangements are under the direction of Hedges-Scott Funeral Home, Camdenton, MO.
