Charles Taylor Obituary

Charles Marshall Taylor, Sr., went to be with the Lord in the early morning hours of Monday, May 12th, 2025. He was he is a great man. You know this.

Those of you who knew him - whether by blood, by bond, or by brief passing - felt the warmth of Charles.

Those of you who grew up with him - he carried your memories with him, always.

Those of you he enlisted with - the brotherhood you shared never left his spirit.

Those he secured and served in the behavioral health center - you helped shape his strength.

Those he protected and quietly ministered to at the bank - your stories stayed with him, long after you parted.

Those he loved - and who loved him - even when memory began to fade, his heart still held you.

Charles Marshall Taylor, Sr. was born on February 13th, 1957, to James Monroe Carter Taylor, Sr. and Ann Jewel (Frey) Taylor in Oakland, California. He grew up in Modesto, California, where he built a life grounded in humility, service, and deep love for family.

After graduating high school, Charles enlisted in the United States Army, where he served his country with pride.

In the late 1970s, he welcomed two sons, Charles Taylor Jr. and Shawn Taylor. Then in 1986, he met a woman who, in his own words, "turned his head quickly" Dephany.

She became his beloved wife and the mother of their children. With her came Davetta Botley-Taylor, whom Charles embraced as his daughter from the very beginning.

In the years that followed, Charles and Dephany added to their family two more daughters: Chanel Taylor and Jessica Taylor.

Charles was a devoted husband, a fiercely loving father, a loyal brother, and a steadfast friend. He cherished his siblings: Brenda Brown, Marie Taylor-Briggs, James Monroe Carter Taylor, Jr., and Perry Taylor, Sr. He kept close friendships with Leo Botley (brother-in-law), Amos Botley III (brother-in-law), Robert Kilgore, David Maxwell, Gene Wilson, and Todd James - brothers in all but blood.

He is survived by his wife of nearly 40 years, Dephany Taylor; his children, Charles Taylor Jr., Shawn Taylor, Davetta Botley-Taylor, Chanel Taylor, and Jessica Taylor; his siblings; his lifelong friends; and all who were touched by his presence.

He is preceded in death by his parents, James Monroe Carter Taylor, Sr. and Ann Jewel Taylor.

Out of respect for Charles's wishes, there will be no formal ceremony or gathering. His family asks that you honor his life in your own way, and they request privacy during this time. Any donations in memory of Charles can be given to the King Kennedy Memorial Center in Modesto, CA.

Thank you to whoever wrote the obituary. I learned things about my cousin that I didn´t know because we have been separated for so long. I do remember Charles as a youngster and I remember that he was a sweetheart. My heart goes out to the family and perhaps I´ll meet you all someday. In the meantime, may God be with you and may the joy of having Charles and your family always be with you.
