Elwin Baldwin Obituary

ELWIN LEROY BALDWIN APR 9, 1926 - APR 27, 2011 Elwin passed away Wednesday morning after a big breakfast and visiting with friends and staff at English Oaks Convalescent Hospital. He was smiling and in good spirits as he was happy to be ''home'' after another brief hospital stay. Elwin was a loving uncle, brother and son. He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry Claude and Hannah Marie Baldwin, his brothers Loren and Edgar Baldwin, and his niece Carolyn Baldwin. He is survived by his nephews Bruce (Sharon) Baldwin, Ron (Alice) Baldwin, Bob (Ellen) Baldwin and his sister-in-law Elaine Baldwin, five nephews, three nieces, one great nephew and one great niece. Elwin was born and raised in Hughson, CA. He was an army veteran, where he served four years as a military administrative specialist. He attended colleges to obtain his degree and become an elementary school teacher which spanned nearly 30 years. His teaching career began in Empire, and he later moved to Santa Cruz. He continued his teaching career in Aptos until his retirement in 1981. At that time Elwin returned to his home town of Hughson, to live on the almond ranch that he had purchased years earlier. Elwin was an avid reader and enjoyed learning about many different things. Even though he drove a very modest car, he loved to learn of the newest technologies available in the automotive field. He could tell you specs and the latest information regarding the latest cars being rolled off the assembly line. He would chuckle regarding the experts'' opinions of the new cars and couldn't believe how expensive they were. Elwin also had a love for the Asian culture and arts. He very much appreciated the beauty of the orient. He was able to travel earlier in his life, to visit many of these places that he loved so much. He was devoted to many charities, especially the Salvation Army, Gospel Mission, American Heart Association and American Diabetes Association. A grave site service will be held on Monday, May 2, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. at Lakewood Memorial Park, 900 Santa Fe Ave., Hughson, CA. Elwin lived a simple, quiet life with a motto of Live your life - Enjoy yourself and go have a burger'' . His quirky smile and sense of humor will be truly missed. Elwin spoke of the saving and forgiving grace of our Lord on many occasions. He was ready to begin his journey with Jesus, after one more breakfast. www.modbee.com/obituaries www.lakewoodhughson.com

Sharon and Bruce are dear friends of mine and I had the honor to participate in Elwin's care on several occasions when he was at Memorial. He was so sweet and interested in the people around him and he always had a great smile. I know this is a sad loss for the family and you are all in my prayers.

Elwin will be missed by our family. Once Bruce and Sharon (our daughter) were married, he became an extended part of our family as well. We enjoyed our visits at family parties with Elwin. We also enjoyed just going out to the car to visit with him when he and Bruce were going out on one of their weekend day trips.

He was a very sweet man and we will miss him. He was funny and was saying joking things even at the hospital when we went to visit with him. He always tried to smile even when we knew he wasn't feeling well.

He is in our prayers and we will miss seeing him.

Elwin was our uncle by marriage. Bruce is our step-father. I saw Uncle Elwin his last Friday at the hospital. I stopped by to visit him and turn the Giant's game on for him. He and I enjoyed the game for a bit and talked about little. He seemed tired but he still seemed happy to see me and gave that great smile of his.

He was a gentle man, and I will miss his wit and our interesting conversations. I am proud to say he was a part of my life and he will truly be missed.

I am a nurse out at English Oaks where Elwin lived. I took care of him and he always had a smile for me even if he wasn't feeling well. I will miss him a lot and he will have a special place in my heart forever.

Uncle Elwin continued to teach me "quiet grace" right up to the end of his life. He also reminded me daily to not take things too personally. "Things happen, we just need to learn to deal with it". He very much lived the motto of, "Say what you need to, agree to disagree, then everyone go out and have a burger together".

I have been blessed to have had him in my life, and consider it an honor to have been able to serve him in any need. His heart was full of love, his mind full of knowledge and his sense of humor a joy.

I missed him the moment he left us, yet rejoice knowing that I will be reunited with him soon. I know he is at last in comfort and peace with our Father God. If there are burgers and chocolate shakes in Heaven, I know he is enjoying them with that sweet smile of shining through.
