Herbert Edgar Barker, Jr.
October 14, 1935 - January 17, 2023
Rocklin, California - Herbert Edgar Barker, Jr. died peacefully at the age of 87 on January 17, 2023. "Bert" was born in Oakland, California, on October 14, 1935, the son of Herbert Edgar Barker, Sr. and Mildred Schieck Barker. His family moved to Oakdale, CA when he was in the 8th grade. He enjoyed playing the piano in the Dance Band at Oakdale High School and was Student Body President. He graduated from the University of California at Berkeley in 1957 and was a member of Theta Delta Chi fraternity and President of the Senior Class.
After Cal he joined the Army and was stationed in Ft. Eustis, Virginia. He married Julie Patton in 1959 and then attended Hastings College of the Law where he was a member of the Order of the Coif and the Thurston Society, and graduated Number 4 in his class. He practiced law for 25 years in Modesto, and in 1988 became Executive Director of the California Alumni Association in Berkeley and, then CEO of University ProNet in Palo Alto. In 1997 he joined his oldest son, Craig, working for A.G. Edwards & Sons for 10 years.
Throughout the years Bert and Julie were world travelers along with being a beneficent team. Their hearts and philanthropic efforts were focused on Cal, the Salvation Army, Kiwanis, Rotary, St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Modesto, Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Grass Valley, the Grass Valley Center for the Arts, In Concert Sierra, Native Sons, and more.
Bert Barker loved his friends, animals, old cars, trains, philanthropy, the United States of America, most especially God and his family. He is predeceased by his sister, Mary Ann Barker White of Grass Valley. He is survived by his wife, Julie, with whom they celebrated 63 years of marriage, his son, Craig and wife Sharon, Grandaughter, Haley, and her fiancé, Connor Hagan, daughter, Kate, son Mike and wife, Nicole, and granddaughters, Sophia and Mazzy and faithful canine companion, Daisy.
On Sunday, February 26, 2023 at 1:00PM PT a Memorial Service and Celebration of Life will be held at Emmanuel Episcopal Church (235 South Church Street, Grass Valley, CA 95945).
