Jack McCoy Obituary

Jack McCoy of Modesto, winner of more races than anyone in the history of NASCAR's West Coast circuit, died Tuesday at 72.

Mr. McCoy, who also was in the tire business much of his life, died suddenly at a Modesto hospital, his family said.

Friends and racing colleagues remembered him as a skilled stock car driver who would have ranked with national legends had he raced full-time.

"Nobody could drive a short track like Jack McCoy — nobody," said Dick Hagerty of Oakdale. "He was just in a class of his own."

Mr. McCoy, a Dodge driver, won a record 54 races in the 1960s and 1970s in NASCAR's regional series, known at various times as Grand National West, Winston West and Pacific Coast Late Model Series. He finished first in the final standings in 1966 and 1973 and second four times.

Mr. McCoy balanced the racing with his work at McCoy Tire Co. and his home life with his wife, Peggy Joyce McCoy, and seven children.

Mr. McCoy was born March 29, 1937, in Los Angeles and later moved with his family to a ranch near Ceres. His father, John McCoy, opened McCoy Tire on Ninth Street in Modesto in 1950.

Jack McCoy, who attended Turlock High School and Modesto Junior College, went to work in the family business.

He later opened his own tire shop on McHenry Avenue, eventually branching into specially made tires and other supplies for race cars.

Mr. McCoy is survived by his wife; his son, Dr. Harry Brown of Modesto; six daughters, Gina Vance of Modesto, Tracee Collins of Kansas, Kathleen Lengel of Ripon, Kim Tofanelli of Sacramento, Cindy Brown of Modesto and Christine Brown of Incline Village, Nev.; sister, Louise Barnick of Modesto; brothers, Dan McCoy of Atascadero and Robert McCoy of Modesto; and 14 grandchildren.

A service will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Franklin and Downs, McHenry Chapel, 1150 McHenry Ave., Modesto.

Remembrances may be made to the Carole Sund-Carrington Memorial Reward Foundation, 301 Downey Ave., Modesto 95354, or to a favorite charity.

I just learned that my favorite racecar driver has gone on...and I'm so sad. What an honor to have known such a fine man--who just happened to be "the best racecar driver in the West," with those powerful hemi engines! I actually got to score Jack's laps in a Riverside race back in 1967 or 1968. What a great time that was! Jack, you will be missed. My heart and prayers go out to you, Peggy and family. May you find peace in your sorrow. We have lost a great American, father, and such an honorable role model. May God bless you during this time.

My sympathy to the entire McCoy family, I had the pleasure of meeting Jack at Daytona Speedweeks in 1979, he was at the convention center and I purchased a tape on racing tires. I was in awe of being around him, even though i am from Baltimore Md. I have several stock car heroes for the west coast, Jack McCoy, Ernie Conn, Gary Nelson , and Ivan Baldwin, that night Jack and i talked a lot about Ivan he was friendly and very open to me. We had talked recently online about his new book, He liked the idea I mentioned when I met him in 1979 brought back a lot of memories. When I was into NASCAR I could not wait to get my latest issue of Stock Car racing magazine to check on my west coast heroes. I will always remeber him and the other men I mentioned becasue they have inspired me when I was involved in NASCAR and I feel blessed for having met him, God Bless and RIP Jack McCoy. He made the racing world and a lot of people's lives better!

I remember Jack at the "99 " speedway, well. His preference for the slant six engine, at that time , the 60's , made him
somewhat of a hero when he took the v-8's down. Bought many "street legal" racing slicks from the store on 9th ..

Harry,
I am so sorry to read of your Dad. I didnt realize that Jack was your DAD!! I first met your Dad while I was working at Rogers Jewelers. He would come in and visit Roger. Then I talked with him a few times at the tire shop. You know I am crazy about cars and your Dad told me of some great stories of his racing and of course questions to ask the guys about taking care of my car and keeping then on their toes!! He was a very nice and caring guy.
I will not tell you the pain of loss goes away because it doesnt. It will become lighter but you will have an emptiness in your heart but it is replaced with love and great memories!

My thoughts and prayers go out to the family. Met Jack several times, the last time about May of 1981. Drove down from Oregon to get some tires (racing) from him. We lived in Modesto in '63-'64, watched him at 99 Speedway. Very nice man, he will be missed by all who knew him.

Uncle Jack
My special memory is when You and Peggy came to Florida to visit and you were determined to find this street bazaar in Miami. Drew was sweating bullets driving through some of the worst areas in Miami and you were giving the directions until Peggy reminded you that we might know Miami a little better (which by the way we didn't)We did not make it to the bazaar but we did make it to South Beach another fun story... Thanks Jack you were a great man who made others happy. You will be missed by all who had a chance to know you!

I had only met Jack one time and that was at the Grand Opening of the New Stockton 99 Speedway. I was able to talk with him a bit before the opening ceremonies and he left me with a smile on my face. Not just because of the stories he had shared with me but because i also realized i was in the presence of a racing legend. He will be missed by all in the racing community. To his family and friends i send my condolences. A legend in his own time. We thank you Mr. McCoy you will be missed by all.

The community has lost a legend. A very special man with a big heart and a big smile. I was Jack's bookkeeper for the race car shop for many years. My husband Darrell was on the pit crew for the race car. That's where Darrell and I started our 35 year relationship and marriage. Oh the many memories and story's that will come alive with his passing. I for one, the time he took me around the race track in Las Vegas, what a thrill. To the last time we were all together when Jack was inducted into the hall of fame in Southern California for his driving. His name seemed to always hinge with something for the community and racing.
