May 15, 1950 - October 25, 2021
Modesto, California - The Lord called Joan Alice Matthews home on Monday, October 25, 2021 at the age of 71. Joan was born May 15, 1950 in Stanford, California, and graduated in 1968 from San Carlos High School. She earned her Associates degree in 1970 from the College of San Mateo. Joan was a devoted Air Force wife to her surviving husband of 51 years, Jerry Ronald Matthews, and an incredible mother to their three sons as they traveled to many assignments throughout the US during Ron's military career. Dear friends were blessed by her wonderful meals and upheld by her faithful prayers. As a preschool teacher in Papillion, NE she shared God's love with little ones and their families for over a decade.
Joan was delighted to return to her native California in 2001 and settle in Modesto after Ron's retirement. She lovingly helped care for both of her parents as they aged and hosted many holiday family gatherings. All of the grandchildren delighted in summer days spent in the pool with Gramma Joan. Her laughter was contagious and her lap always available. Joan continued her legacy of love by ministering for many years as a preschool Sunday School teacher and a Stephen Minister at her church home, Modesto Covenant Church.
Joan was preceded in death by her parents Roy and Alice Salvato.
She is survived by her beloved husband Ron, sons Scott(Jessica), Keith(Gina), and Michael(Linda) and 7 grandchildren whom she adored: Joshua, Jeremy, Jayden, Madison, Ryan, Sophia, and Benjamin.
She also leaves mother-in-law Lanelle, sisters Karen, Gail (Orville), Susan(Greg), and brother David(Kelly), as well as nieces and nephews Stephanie(Gary), Heidi(Michael), Tim(Kayla), Kevin(Elizabeth), Tom, and Peter.
Joan's life revolved around her faith, family and friends. No matter the circumstances, Joan always gave thanks to God and found a way to be an encouragement to others. Her selflessness was an inspiration and brought out the best in each of us. Although her family is deeply saddened by her sudden passing, we rejoice in knowing she is with her Heavenly Father. She will be dearly missed and ever present in our hearts.
On Monday, November 8, 2021 from 4:30-6:30pm there will be a closed casket visitation at Modesto Covenant Church. On Tuesday November 9, 2021 at 11:00am there will be a Memorial Service at Modesto Covenant Church with a catered luncheon to immediately follow. A private burial will take place on Wednesday, November 10, 2021 at the San Joaquin National Cemetery.
As Joan's passion was sharing Christ's love with children, in lieu of flowers, the family requests donations made in Joan's memory to the Modesto Pregnancy Center or the Modesto Covenant Church's children's ministries.
