Leonard B. Ratto
December 30, 1929 - April 12, 2012
Len entered into heaven's gate on April 12, 2012 in Modesto, CA at the age of 82. Born on December 30, 1929 in Alameda, CA he was the 9th child of Antone & Johanna Ratto. He was an All-American Athlete and Senior Class President at Alameda High in 1948. He gave up a football scholarship to Oregon State to tend to the family farming business while his brothers were completing their military service during World War II. In December 1951, Len served in the Air National Guard and the United States Air Force Reserve as an Airman Second Class until October 1953 in Spokane, Washington. Over the next 64 years he did what he loved to do, farming with his brothers and nephews at Ratto Bros. Inc. His hobbies include: farming, enjoying a glass of wine with family and friends, Sunday night family dinners, breakfast with his farmer friends, and a good game of dice and/or cards. He was a member of the Old Fisherman's Club, The Swiss-Italian Club, and St. Joseph's Parish.  He was a proud man, who enjoyed growing vegetables, as well as spending time with his grandchildren.
Len is survived by his wife of 46 years, Virginia (Ginger). Their three daughters: Lisa Druet (Ric), Jana Armstrong (Eric), Kara Coleman (Tim). He was blessed with 6 grandchildren: Alec Druet, Brooke Druet, Thomas Armstrong, Tiago Armstrong, Tyler Coleman and Kathryn Coleman. His siblings: Catherine Buchl, Edwin Ratto, Joan Ciccarelli and Ann Gangl, and many nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents, and siblings; John (Jack) F. Ratto, Adelaide (Sis) Ciccarelli, Antone (Bud) Ratto Jr., Frank (Babe) J. Ratto, and Raymond Ratto Sr.
He was a wonderful husband, the best dad three girls could have been blessed with, and his generosity will forever be remembered.

Lenny and Ginger are very special people; our condolensces to Ginger and her family for their loss. There will be memories of Lenny helping others and showing compassion and understanding. So many times there were discussions about farming, ag industry, and the future trends he saw. He was dynamic, fair, but firm. He listened, studied, and then elected to make a decision. He always wanted the best for everyone. Lenny worked hard to maintain farming as a way of life and as a business. He was a model that most of us should consider, and he will be dearly missed. Our deepest sympathies to Ginger.

I worked with Len in recent years and found him to be a fine man who was kind, fair, and professional in his dealings. His concern for others was evident. Our families have been associated for many years. Len will be greatly missed, both professionally and personally.
