LESLIE J. ZEIGLER Aug. 1, 1917 - Jan. 19, 2003 BANGOR - Leslie J. Zeigler, 85, died Jan. 19, 2003, at a local hospital. She was born in Modesto, Calif., Aug. 1, 1917, daughter of Jacob Floyd and Ramona Clair (Suggett) Zeigler.
She was a graduate of the University of California, Berkley, with a B.S. degree in chemistry (Phi Beta Kappa) and a master of library science degree. She began work as a research chemist from 1936-1950, working in Harrison, N.J., Berkley and Richmond, Calif., leaving to return to academic studies a the Pacific School of Religion where she earned a master of divinity degree in 1954 and a Th.D. degree in 1957. She was a lecturer in New Testament and theology, an assistant in the library at the Pacific School of Religion from 1957-1958, and an instructor in philosophy and religion at Corvallis State University, Corvallis, Ore., from 1959-1963. Leslie came to the Bangor Theological Seminary in 1963 with various official titles, and was ordained a minister of the United Church of Christ at All Souls Congregational Church, Bangor in 1964, retiring June of 1985 as professor of Christian theology at the Bangor Theological Seminary. Her sabbatical years were spent studying at Tubingen, Germany at the Tantur Ecumenical Institute, Israel, teaching at Pacific School of Religion, Berkeley, and as a visiting scholar and adjunct faculty member at Pittsburg Theological Seminary, Pittsburg, Pa. Since retiring, she had spent almost two years between 1987-1988 working and teaching at the Tantur Institute, a semester in the spring of 1992 as an adjunct faculty member at Pacific School of Religion, and an academic year from 1993-1994 as a visiting scholar at Princeton Theological Seminary, Princeton, N.J. She has traveled quite extensively to numerous theological conferences and seminars, and numerous study programs.
Souls Congregational Church, Bangor, with the Rev. Dr. James I. Haddix, pastor and teacher, officiating. Interment will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery. Gifts in her memory may be made to the Memorial Fund of All Souls Congregational Church, 10 Broadway, Bangor. A service of Brookings-Smith Bangor.
