Neil passed away unexpectedly at his home in Turlock, California at the age of 89. He was born to Fred and Dorothy Johnston, the second of two children.  Neil lived his entire life in Turlock.
He graduated from Turlock High School in 1945 and later graduated from Modesto Junior College.  Neil served in California's State Guard, and in the U.S. Army where he was stationed in Okinawa, Japan, and Korea.
Neil married Constance M. (Polly) Nixon in 1953.  They had two children, Jason and Fred.
He began working with his father and brother as a distributor for Standard Oil in 1953, delivering gasoline and oil to the farmers around the central valley. They bought the business from Chevron in the 1980's and named their new business Mid-Cal Oil. He retired in 1992.
A World War II aviation (War Bird) aficionado, Big Band Jazz enthusiast, Formula One Racing follower, and interested in all things high fidelity; Neil kept abreast of everything in consumer technology. He was always ready to talk to anybody and had entertaining stories to share.
 He was preceded in death by his son, Jason, and his brother Harry.
Neil is survived by his wife, Polly, his son, Fred (Mary Ann), a beloved caregiver and "adopted daughter" Kay, three nephews, three nieces, and several cousins.
A Memorial Service will be held at First United Methodist, 1660 Arbor Way Turlock, CA on Tuesday, July 12, at 11:00 a.m.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First United Methodist Church in Turlock.
