Virgil Donald Armstrong
November 12, 1923 - April 7, 2016
V. Donald Armstrong went home to be with his Lord on Thursday, April 7, 2016. He was born to Thomas and Laura Armstrong on November 12, 1923 in Hardy, Arkansas near the beautiful Spring River.
Don enlisted in the U.S. Navy and entered active service on April 27, 1943. Don proudly served his country for three and a half years aboard 7 different minesweepers in the Asiatic Pacific. He left the service on November 15, 1946.
After accepting Christ as his Lord and Savior, Don was a devoted follower of Jesus Christ trying to do and say what would honor his Lord. Don served his Father as a deacon for many years and as a Sunday School teacher for 57 years which began at Orangeburg Avenue Baptist Church in 1953 and ended there in 2012.
Don is survived by Doris Armstrong, his wife of 69 years; daughter Deanna Hahn of Lake Havasu City, AZ; daughter Donna Botto (Mike) of Oakdale, CA; son-in-law Marvin Jolly of Henderson, NV; grandchildren Jason Freid of Gilbert, AZ; Erica McGhee of Oakdale, CA; Kara (Joel) McGaffee of Oakdale, CA; Colton Botto of Reno, NV; Kalindi Botto of Oakdale, CA; Sandy Shah of Perris, CA; Dale Jolly (Ebony) of Helena MT; and Sheryl Trefethen (Bill) of Greeley, CO; and twelve great-grandchildren. Brother Glen Armstrong, Modesto, CA; Sister Juanita Williams, Fresno, CA.
Don was preceded in death by parents, Thomas and Laura Armstrong, baby son Larry Donald Armstrong, daughter Gail Jolly, son-in-law Mark Hahn, grandson Phillip Freid, granddaughter Jennifer Freid, Sister Josie (Charlie) Hartline, brother-in-law Don Williams, sister-in-law Betty Armstrong.
Don's Celebration of Life will be held on Wednesday, April 13 with viewing beginning at 9 AM at Orangeburg Avenue Baptist Church at 313 E. Orangeburg Avenue, Modesto, followed by words of comfort and inspiration by Pastor Stuart McNarry at 10 AM. Interment will be at Lakewood Cemetery in Hughson.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Don's memory may be made to Community Hospice of Modesto at 4368 Spyres Way, Modesto, CA 95356 or the Building Fund for Orangeburg Avenue Baptist Church (95350).
