Anthony Simunek Obituary

Anthony Miroslav Simunek
August 9, 1976 ~ December 30, 2009

MONTEREY - We celebrate and remember the life of Anthony Miroslav Simunek, born August 9, 1976, who went home to be with the Lord on December 30, 2009 at the age of 33.
Tony, a first generation U.S. national whose family immigrated from the Czech Republic, was born in Santa Monica and moved with his family to the Monterey Peninsula at the age of three. He attended Monterey schools and graduated from Monterey High in 1994. Tony played the drums and also received recognition for his skills in photography.
After proving himself an excellent worker and valuable asset at several local companies and businesses (Monte Vista Market from the age of 12, Surfaces, and Walton & Sons), he took over his father's masonry company, European Masonry, in 2002. Over the seven years he operated as owner, he successfully grew the business and completed hundreds of jobs throughout the Monterey County, both small and grand, always surpassing expectations and still striving to become better at his craft. He always said it was the best feeling to know he had truly made someone happy at the end of a day.
A stone mason by profession, Tony moonlighted as mechanic, inventor or "cobbler" with multiple projects always being worked on, be it truck, vintage car, motorcycle or boat. He had a unique way of taking something forgotten and broken and making it special and better than new.
For his 6th birthday his father gave him his first dirt-bike, an Ital-jet he still had when he passed. So began the life-long love of riding anything with two wheels. He was known for his wheelies, especially in somewhat inappropriate locations, but also relished the feeling of long scenic rides out to Arroyo Seco, down the coast to Big Sur, or wherever seemed like an interesting stretch of pavement. Rides with friends were always looked forward to and track days at Laguna Seca were taken full advantage of.
Many summer weekends Tony spent lakeside with friends and family. He was always happy surrounded by those he loved with the sun on his face, the wheel in his hand, his head moving in time with the music and singing along. It wasn't uncommon for he and his friends to work through the night on a boat motor just to get it in the water the next day (to make that happen).
His son, Joseph, was born two-and-a-half years ago on Father's Day, the happiest day of his life, he'd say. He was an amazingly fun and loving daddy. So proud of his baby bird.
Tony Simunek was someone you couldn't help but love. He was charismatic and genuine; generous and hard working; fun-loving and spontaneous. He loved making people happy and had a knack for giving nicknames that stuck. He had a great laugh. He could be found telling someone a little known fact about one of the numerous U.S. or European cities he visited, or how a rear wheel differential works. If someone he cared for was in need he'd give whatever he had. If you forgot your license plate number, chances were good he'd remember it and every other car he knew you had driven. He cleaned up nice, but preferred wearing jackets that may have said he worked for the city and his name was Alfonso. He was a bit random. He was so very loved.
He leaves behind his son, Joseph Timothy Simunek; Joseph's mother, Amelia Simunek; his mother, Miroslava Simunek; sister, Yvette Simunek (Jay Edwards); his grandmother, Antonie Chmelikova of the Czech Republic; parents-in-law, Marian and Timothy Hrusa; sisters-in- law, Essie and Ella Hrusa; niece, Katie Hrusa, all of the Monterey Peninsula; step-mother, Jana Simunek; step-brother, Thomas Brousek (Karin, his wife); step-sister, Tereza Mader (who just gave birth to a healthy baby boy, Lucas, and Denis, her husband); and was pre- deceased by his father, Anthony Joseph Simunek in the Czech Republic; and many aunts, uncles, cousins and too many amazing, close friends to name throughout the West Coast and in the Czech Republic. Last but not least, his loyal animals, Abby, Bucket and Edward.
A Memorial Service and Celebration of his life will be held at the Laguna Seca Raceway Trackside Pavillion on Friday, January 8, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. A trust account for his son has been set up at Chase Bank, Account #2937382477.

Vím, jak težké je prekonat ztrátu nekoho drahá pro vás. Doufám, že tento výraz sympatií k pohodlnejší dnes. Dále bych se chtel nechat s nejakou uklidnující myšlenky bible. Mužete cítit zdrceni a premoženi.

I am touched by the words of so many who added so much to Tony's life.
It was difficult to find words for his obituary that I wrote because I had so much to say, so many details I wanted people to remember. I can't believe it has been over three months. I look at Joseph everyday and am thankful that you,Tony, gave me my greatest gift in my life. There is so much of Joseph in you Tony. He misses his daddy so much and I am struggling to find ways to help him understand why you aren't here for him.
I look at the photos I have access to, and wish that I had the video from our family camcorder to watch our trips to europe, you riding your bikes and playing with our baby boy with Joseph. He wants to see you and hear your voice so badly sometimes... and I have been left with very little to help him remember you.

There will never be another who holds the same space in my heart. I will never be the same. I will remember our life together everyday because of our precious baby bird, and try to stay strong for him.

I miss you. I will always love you.

Tony - the years we spent together will be forever a part of my life. I hope that one day I will have the honor of sharing some of those wacky adventures with your son. I know his laughter will find its way to your ears no matter how far. For the years we lost I will not grieve, there will be plenty of time to catch up in heaven. All my love brother.

Tony, It's hard to find the words to tell you how sad I am. I truly wish you a safe and restful journey home. I'm really going to miss your spirit and smile in my world. In the ten years we've spent working together, we shared so many hours it seems talking about lifes rich tapestry and the difficlties we all face from time to time. We confided in each other and I know you were hurting. To your family and all of your wonderful friends I hope your spirit can live strong and I wish them all comfort, peace, and strenght to get through this most difficult time. Rest in peace my friend and may God Bless You.

"He left us quietly,
His thoughts unknown,
But left us a memory,
We are proud to own;
So treasure him Lord,
In Your garden of rest,
For when on earth,
He was one of the best."

Tony,
You will be missed. From that first day I met you when my mixer truck was stuck in Marina in a sand dune. You were the first to grab a chain and offer to pull me out fully loaded with 9 yards. I told you there was no way it was going to work. You hopped in your Chevy and back it up threw the chain on my bumper and hammered down. You did it man. From then on our friendship grew as we both share a passion for fast trucks and building motors. I will truly miss you Tony you were a good friend. For now I will be down here taking care of business bro until we meet again.

For a time, long ago, we felt Tony was like our own. His smiling face and positive attitude were always uplifting. Everyone who encountered Tony was better for it. Most are remembered for what they did, Tony will always be remembered for who he was!

May the angels care for him like he did for others.

Hey Work horse~ im going to miss you but at least I have a lot of good memories of you.. like when you let me drive your chevelle at 13 years old, when you would take Joey and I in the Datsun to go dirt bike riding, running over Kevins car with your blazer, the motard rides, you and me raming each other with our work trucks at granitrock, bike rides, racing down Del Monte in our loaded down work trucks, and you hopping your truck at granitrock. Thank you Tony for always encouraging me to be a hard worker and a good father, just as you were.
Love and miss you.

I can not remember another time in my life that I have been so shocked as when I open the paper this morning and saw your wonderful smiling face. Just last night I told my husband that I had to call Tony because I wanted to extend one of his rock walls at our house. As we walked around here this morning we both commented on how much you touched our lives. The amazing job you guys did on the Fireplace, fixing the switch for the fan on the Fireplace, putting up a towel rack for J.B., the Garden Rocks, the Mail Boxes, the Pillars, Abbey sleeping in the chair in the garage, you and Amelia sitting in J.B.'s office regarding the house. We knew the very first day we met you that you were a special person. P.S. You brought up KPIG to the house and it is on everyday. (NOTE TO JOSEPH} Joseph your Dad was a very special person who was well loved by everyone. I am sure you will have lots of your Dad's friends that will be more than happy to tell you what wonderful Dad you had and will help you in any way they can. As you go through life you need to know your Dad had left you a legacy. What really is important is being fair and honest (which your Dad was) and willing to help anyone who needs it. Words can not describe what a special person he was. A true human being who cared.

Dear Yvette and The Simunek family,
I was so sad to read about Tony in the paper this morning. I remember him as an eager, bright little guy at Monte Vista School when I was the Multicultural Teacher there. He learned English so quickly! And I remember him as a very hard worker at Monte Vista Market-always with a smile. I just wanted you to know I was thinking of you and send you my very deepest sympathies. May God Bless you and give you peace. With love, Mrs. Mary Fry

"God saw you getting tired and a cure was not to be. So He put His arms around you and whispered "come to me." With tearful eyes we watched you, and saw you pass away. Although we loved you dearly, we could not make you stay. A golden heart stopped beating, hardworking hands at rest. God broke our hearts to prove to us, He only takes the best."

Yvette, may Tony rest in peace! Remember all the good things about him and cherish the memories forever. If you need anything, please know I am here for you.
