Dinorah Flores Obituary

Floresâ€"Dinorah Alayon, longtime resident of the Monterey Peninsula, passed away from complications after surgery. Her beloved husband, Ramon, preceded her in death. Her niece, Silvia Calonje, and numerous relatives survive her. Born in Santiago de Cuba, she graduated from the University of Havana with a degree in Philosophy and Humanities. After Fidel Castro took over Cuba, she immigrated to Spain and later, to Washington, DC where she worked for the Defense Language Institute (DLI) before transferring to Monterey where she worked for 25 years as a Spanish Language teacher. During her tenure at DLI, she received numerous recognitions and awards. After she retired in 1998, she continued working for the FBI as a Spanish Language Proficiency Tester until her death. Dinorah was an accomplished pianist and enjoyed playing for her numerous friends and relatives. She lived a full and happy life, first in Cuba and, later, in her adopted country. She talked often about her native Cuba and her ardent desire to see her country free; unfortunately, she passed away without her wishes coming true. Dinorah was a member of the Presidio of Monterey Chapel. Her innumerable friends and colleagues will greatly miss her. A memorial service will take place on Friday, February 6 at 5:00 pm at the Holy Spirit Chapel in Monterey. Her family suggests that any memorial contributions be sent to the Holy Sprit Chapel, 302 High St., Monterey, 93942 or St. Jude's Children's Hospital, 502 St. Jude Pl., Memphis, TN, 37015. Dear Sylvita and famiy:

I will always remember Cuquita for her vibrant zest for life and always inquisitive mind. When Isaac and I visited her a few years back, she wanted to know all about what he was studying and what he was planning to do. Of course, the visit could not end without a "cafecito". We will always remember her graciousness and warm, beautiful smile.
All our love.

El mas sentido pesame a Silvita y familia de parte de Emilio y mia.
Dinorah will be dearly remembered by her family and by her numerous friends. She was a person who would win your friendship right away due to her kindness and positive attitude. She always found something nice to say to you.
I will miss Dino not only because she was my colleague and my compatriot but also my friend....

Our deepest sympathy to Dinorah's family. We lived next to Dinorah for many years & have missed her as a neighbor since we moved to Montana Sept 2007 but she would call us from time to time & we her. Dinorah was simply gracious & kind hearted. Every Mother's day she brought over a bouquet of flowers. We imagine Ramon welcoming her to heaven. God bless, John & Lisa Burke

Dinorah was my great-aunt and godmother. When I was very young she lived across the street from her sister - my grandmother - and I loved going to visit her. I watched her make croquetas and to this day I cannot eat one without thinking of her! When she moved from Bethesda, MD to Monterey I was only 4, and for years I expected her to move back. But her heart and home was in California. When I visited in 2004 I understood why: she was living in a gorgeous city, surrounded by terrific, loving friends.
Now she can once again enjoy the company of her sisters and brothers, whom she has been missing for years. I will miss her Christmas visits to D.C., listening to her play the piano, and catching up with her on the phone - even when she corrected my Spanish!
Tia Cuquita, te extraño y te quiero mucho.
Besos de Silvia Cecilia, Michael, Cecilita y Domingo.

Dinorah is a wonderful woman. I will miss her very much. She is a good friend who I visited for several years as I helped her with her meals. I enjoyed our conversations about life and family and she helped me with my Spanish too.
God bless Dinorah and her family.
