The People's Oral History Project changed my life for the positive! So glad to have crossed paths with you Gary! One of the first times we met he gave me a button that says, "What would Saul Alinsky do?" I was hooked ever after!

My late wife, Liz, and I met with Gary, Karen and Juan in 2014. We had a couple meetings at the Unitarian Church (UUCMP). Liz got a quote from Dr. Charlie Clements for the book cover. Liz selected and edited the writings of Rosemary and Howard Matson included in "Voices of Change."
Liz and I connected with Gary and Heidi on social justice and feminist causes. I appreciated that Gary was a draft counselor during the Vietnam War, as I was a Conscientious Objector and burned my draft card during those years. Gary's movement archives are a wonderful and important legacy.
Gary was truly a respectful and brave human being with a generous, democratic soul. ¡Presente!

I met Gary Karnes 15 years ago at Heidi Feldman's house. She was hosting several Big Sur restaurant chefs who had been left homeless by storms in Big Sur, and they were putting on a dinner for Heidi and her friends. I was very impressed by the man - quiet, with a steady confidence that convinced me he was a true gentleman. In all the years since I've admired his determination to do right, follow his intuition, and accomplish amazing feats of public service. So much more I could write. I miss him. He was a good man.

Anyone who who worked in politics the last 40 years in Monterey County knew Gary, who worked on and managed so many campaigns. I remember taking my ironing board and registering voters outside of Monte Mart, and walking the streets of Salinas campaigning door to door, all under Gary's direction. Gary was calm and optimistic during the ups and downs of campaigning and the ups and downs of life "If we didn't win this time, we'll win the next one" I remember when Gary's daughter was born and he announced that they would name her Geneva, after the Geneva peace talks - I thought what a beautiful and meaningful name. Gary was like that. He always saw in life the importance of the struggle for what one believed in, and he never gave up. You will be missed Gary.

If it wasn't for Gary, it's highly likely that I would have gone to Vietnam and not made it back. A lot of my friends went and never came back.
I went to see Gary in Salinas in a little upstairs office in 1971. He counseled me on what to do and what not to do to keep from being drafted. I followed his advice and avoided being drafted..
After that meeting, decades ago, I met him again at the Monterey Sports Center, where we chatted about his writing and life in general.
One day, as we chatted about the world, we discovered that we had known each other since 1971, and I shared with him that I was and am forever grateful to have an ally like Gary to keep me from, what I saw as a horrible fate.
I love you, Gary.
Thank you for all that you have done for me and the community.

Gary was truly a "Voice of Change." It was g great to work with him in so many campaigns. There are very few people who have done so much for our area as Gary has done. He is already sorely missed. Rest in Peace, Gary. You'e definitely earned it.

Gary was such a wonderful soul. Of course his politics we love and all he contributed . Gary did not let cancer keep him from always being kind to those involved in his treatment . He was full of gratitude for those who walked this journey with him . May his memory be for a blessing to Heidi and all the grandchildren and family ~Shayna Morse

I was so sad to see that Gary is gone. We met in Salinas and became good friends and had mutual friends. Then we moved to Pacifica Grove and found that Gary was living in PG as well. We always wanted to get together but we were always busy. Gary was a good guy and did a lot to help people and communities. So sorry to his family and friends. Gary will not be forgotten.

Dear Gary,
It was always a joy to see you with our dear Heidi didi! What an amazing life you led helping people, traveling to Baja Mexico, writing stories, and walking with your dogs. I will always remember your sweet kind personality and will forever cherish the conversations we had about Nepal, our people, politics, and life in general. May God give Heidi didi and family courage and strength at this difficult time. Rest in Peace.
