Helen Kiok Ryu

1931 - 2022

It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of Helen Kiok Ryu on October 21, 2022. Born on February 1, 1931, Kiok Ryu (nee Lee), emigrated to the United States as a 17-year old with her betrothed, Henry Hi Juck Ryu, in 1948 in search of a brighter future. After marrying in 1950, the young couple worked multiple jobs while attending college, scrimping and saving to support their family in Seoul. They eventually settled in Monterey, California where the family expanded to include four sons (Edwin, Richard, Thomas, and Robert) and a daughter (Donna). Helen became a gifted businesswoman as well as an exceptional mother and wife; she accepted nothing less than the best effort from her children while being at all times an unfailing source of comfort, support, and compassion.Helen faced daunting medical challenges in her 50s which she met with uncommon strength and dignity. Despite her physical hardships, she remained extraordinarily positive, relying on her faith and her family, as well as her two beloved longtime caregivers, Fernanda Rivera Valero and Maricruz Rivera, for support and spirit. She never complained despite her physical limitations and always maintained her very keen sense of humor, as well as her grace, kindness, humility and wisdom. Her only fault may have been her zealous comments, both real and imagined, about her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.Her husband, Henry, preceded her in passing in 1999, with whom she will be laid to rest at El Encinal cemetery in Monterey, CA. She is survived by a brother and sister, her five children and their partners, 12 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren who unfortunately will not have the pleasure of knowing and being loved by their amazing Halmoni.A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 17 at 2:00 p.m. at the York School Chapel.
