Thomas C. Coleman Jr. passed away on Sunday, September 3, 2023. It is here where Tom met his wife, Jayshil. I had not heard from Tom for awhile and was shocked to hear he had passed away. I grew up on Cullen Street with Tom. We were the same age and in school together. He was always funny and so smart. So proud of the man he became. I will miss reminiscing about our old neighborhood with him. My heart goes out to his family.

The news that Tom had passed hit me hard. He and I go back a long way, having met circa 1970 at LMU. Books and ideas drew us together and common interests in Nietzsche and Wagner, jazz and Kerouac. I played Sal Paradise to his Dean Moriarty except that I was the driver while he rode shotgun. I have forgotten how many trips we made up California 1 to Big Sur, Frisco, Arcata and where all else in my '63 Karmann Ghia convertible. We stayed in touch over the years with meetings in such improbable places as Fort Huachuca, Arizona where Tom was stationed for a time. We enriched each other's lives. He and I and Kerouac were 'Octoberites' to use a word Tom coined. I'll honor his memory this October by re-reading our correspondence and recalling our adventures. My condolences to his family, friends, Army buddies, and all who knew him.

Tom was a loyal Catholic gentleman, a patriotic U.S. Army Veteran, and a Knights of Columbus Fourth Degree Sir Knight who served on the Honor Guard for many years. We will miss his loyal service and his in-depth knowledge of Catholic Church and secular history. We admire his having graduated from the Defense Language school having mastered the Korean language. We miss him. May Jesus and Mary rest his soul and comfort his wife, Jayshill, and all his family and give them the healing they need most.

I remember Tom well. You never knew where he would pop up, but you always knew he'd have something significant to say. It wasn't a trip to the commissary if I didn't run into Tom. We were both members of a fairly small club, current/former Korean linguists. Also remember Jayshil from CHOMP, she helped prep me for open-heart surgery some years ago. My heartfelt condolences to the Coleman family. We are all diminished by the loss of Tom.
