Judge John G. BookoutBOOKOUT, Judge John G., of Montgomery, AL passed away on Friday, July 18, 2003. A native of Birmingham, Alabama, Judge Bookout and wife had recently re-turned to Montgomery following 20 years in Omaha, Nebraska.Funeral services will be held at First Baptist Church on Tuesday, July 22, 2003 at 1:00 p.m.,with the Dr. Jay Wolf and the Dr. Stephen Edgington officiating. Judge Bookout is survived by his wife, Martha H. Bookout of Ashland, AL; daughter Julie (Bruce) Johnson of Gulf Breeze, FL, grandsons, Alex-ander and Zachary; daughter Jana (Steve) Edgington of Charles-ton, S.C., granddaughters, Ashlen and Victoria; daughter Janet (Len) Stirrat of Tallahassee, FL, grandson, Tyler, and granddaughter, Martha; mother, M' T. Bookout of Birming-ham, AL; sister, Jeannine Bookout of Citronelle, AL; sister, Jennifer (Bill) McAllister of Birmingham, AL; uncle, J.A. (Ziggy) Thompson of Garden-dale, AL and a number of cousins, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law. His father, the late John S. Bookout of Birmingham, AL, preceded Judge Bookout in death.Judge Bookout attended the Uni-versity of Alabama where he earned B.S.L. and Juris Doctor De-grees. At age 23, he was appointed Assistant Attorney General of the State of Alabama, then later served as Chief Assistant and Deputy Attor-ney General (1959-71). He served as the Alabama Commissioner of Insurance (1971-75) and as Judge on the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals (1975-82). He was a member of the Alabama, Nebras-ka, and American Bar Associations and the United States Supreme Court Bar.Judge Bookout was elected to the Woodmen of the World Life Insur-ance Society Board of Directors in 1979 and in 1982, he was appoint-ed Vice President and General Counsel. In January 1985, he was elected National President, CEO and was serving as the Chairman of the Board of Trustees at the time of his death.Judge Bookout's Nebraska mem-bership, activities and awards in-clude: Rotary Club of Omaha; Board of Trustees, Nebraska Me-thodist Hospital (Chairman 1993-95); Advisory Board, Salvation Army (1984-92); Board of Directors, Oma-ha Chamber of Commerce (1985-97; Chairman 1992); Chairman, Board of Directors, United Way of the Midlands (1991); Board Memb-er Mid America Council and Cen-tral Region, Boy Scouts of America. He was a holder of the Scouts Silver Beaver and Silver Antelope awards.Judge Bookout's Alabama activi-ties include: Co-founder of the Lur-leen Wallace Cancer Hospital, Bir-mingham, AL (1969-82); Past Presi-dent, Kiwanis Club of South Mont-gomery. He was a 32nd Degree Mason and Past Master.Judge Bookout retired in 1986 from the Army Reserve as a Reserve Ap-pellate Military Judge on the U.S. Army Court of Military Review, the Army's highest court. Previously he served as Colonel in the Alabama Army National Guard. He served as a Civilian Aide to the Secretary of the Army from 1992 until the time of his death. Visitation will be held at Leak-Memory Chapel on Monday, July 21, 2003 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.In lieu of flowers memorial dona-tions may be made to First Baptist Church, 305 South Perry Street, Montgomery, AL, 36104.Alabama Heritage Directing
