Lucille Cox Obituary
( November 01, 1925 - May 18, 2020 )
Lucille S. Cox, age 94, passed away May 18, 2020. She was born in Hacoda, Alabama on November 1, 1925 to Marlin Hickman and Carrie Augusta Savage. She attended Walton County schools, graduating from Paxton High School in 1942. Along with thousands of other young women of the World War II era, she joined the war effort by working as a welder in a shipyard in Panama City, Florida.
During her long and eventful life she worked in the University Book Store at the University of Alabama while her husband was in college, worked as a stenographer for Lipton Tea in New Jersey, served as City Clerk for the City of Florala, owned a beauty shop, worked as a legal secretary for an attorney, was a Real Estate Broker, and, finally, worked for the local Chamber of Commerce until she was 89 years old.
She was generous with her time and money and was always willing to help anyone, if she could. The week before she died, she was taking calls from strangers and answering questions about former Florala residents. She loved Florala. She enjoyed playing Bridge with her friends and would play Poker with anyone daring enough to play with her. As long as she was able, she loved to Jitter-Bug. She was loving wife, a loving mother, and a loving grandmother and great grandmother. She was preceded in death by her husband of 42 years, Royce Young Cox, her parents, her sister Opal Ann (Maraman), brothers Robert David, Joel, Emmanuel, Curtis Ray and Theron Bazell (Lell) Savage.
She is survived by her son, Royce Michael Cox (Jennifer), grandson Neal Royce Cox (Tracy), granddaughters Elizabeth Amanda Moseley (Chuck) and Erica Lynn Magdon, great-grandchildren Kyle Moseley, Neal Magdon, Ashlyn Cox, Kelli Moseley and Tyler Royce Cox.

Funeral services for Lucille Cox will be 2PM Saturday May 23, 2020 at the First Baptist Church in Florala with Charlie Lennard and Bryant Hansen officiating. Visitation will be 1 hour before services. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery.

I will always remember visiting Rip & Lucille Cox with my parents Joe & Dot Rudd. They lived at the end of Wood Avenue down the Road from my grandmother Bessie Rudd. Ms. Lucille was so sweet and soft spoken, always had a smile and such a beautiful person. I was very young at the time but always remember those visits. The yard was so pretty, For some reason I guess being so young I love the circular driveway and the sunken living room!! Rip & Lucille will always be in my heart and memories. Praying for the family at this time of loss.

Lucille was a loving friend and dear to me. We met 25 years ago and, even though we lived miles apart, over the years we occasionally we would see each other and we kept in touch by phone calls. I'm glad we enjoyed our last conversation just about a week ago. I have so many memories of her and she will stay in my heart.

Some words describe you so perfectly.....a true Southern lady, proud citizen of Florala, community driven, faithful to your church, avid Bridge player, loving and kind family friend, soft-spoken and always ready with a smile. You spanned so many decades with our family from an early friend of mothers to a close friend of mine and Hilda's, to an encouraging example to our boys, and finally open arms to our grands. Granny made me feel like part of the family from the first time we met nearly 30 years ago when Amy and I started dating. She was like a 3rd grandmother to me. I will always remember the family time around the holidays when she was relentless at Scrabble. She was always sad when everyone had to leave to go home. Fancy Granny, we will miss you. ❤

I met Lucille several years ago at FBC. She always had a smile to share at church and around town. I was unable to attend her 90th birthday celebration and when I told her how sad I was that I wasn't going to be able to celebrate with her she said with a smile, "that's ok you can come to me 100th birthday party"! I told her I would be there, and we both chuckled. I'm going to miss her, but I know I will see her again one day and we will have eternity together to celebrate!! Prayers for peace and comfort to her family.

She was one of the first we met at FBC Florala. Lucille was friendly, genuine, a good listener and committed to her church. She represented Florala well and on many levels. She was a sweet southern lady who leaves such a rich legacy in her 90+ years. Our lives were enriched by her. She will be missed.

Ms. Lucille will forever be remembered in my heart! She was the optimal Southern Lady. I knew her all my life and she became a tenant of mine at Florala Homes for several years. She was chosen as tenant of the month also. I thought so highly of her and enjoyed her many stories and tales of Florala! We shared many laughs and I admired her in so many ways. She will truly be missed!!! Heaven truly got an Angel!
