Robert Howell Tweedy III

Decatur

Robert Howell Tweedy III of Decatur, born February 16, 1932, to Marjorie Ellen Beard and Robert Howell Tweedy Jr. of Courtland, went to be with the Lord Sunday, July 8, 2012. The funeral service will be Wednesday July 11, 2012, at 2 p.m. at First Bible Church of Decatur with the Reverend Dr. Steve Bateman officiating and Madison Chapel Funeral Home directing. Visitation will be from noon to 2 p.m. at the church.

Mr. Tweedy was a lifelong member of St. John's Episcopal Church where he served as an acolyte, Sunday School Superintendent and on the Vestry. He graduated from Columbia Military Academy in Columbia, Tennessee before attending Auburn University in 1951. He graduated in the School of Engineering with a degree in Industrial Management and with an ROTC commission as a second lieutenant in the United States Air Force. He was a member of the Kappa Alpha fraternity. He returned home to Decatur in 1955 to begin a career with 3M Company in Transportation and Purchasing. Mr. Tweedy was honored as Alabama's Traffic Manager of the year. He was a member of Kiwanis Club, Decatur Investment Club and the Moulton Street Culture Club for many years. Mr. Tweedy participated in several men's Bible studies and devoted chef of girl's Bible study. Mr. Tweedy served on the board of directors of the Monteagle Sunday School Assembly.

Mr. Tweedy was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Carey Tweedy of 60 years, August 5, 2012. Three children, Robert Foster Tweedy and wife, Joanie, Carolyn Carey Key and husband, Gil, Marjorie Loudie Thompson and husband, Skip. Grandchildren include Robert Foster Tweedy Jr. and wife, Christina, Katie Mac Tweedy, Liza Lee Tweedy, Carolyn Key Wardlaw and husband, Nick, Wilson Key, Bob Thompson and wife, Melanie, Sam Thompson and wife, Tara, Loudie Ellen Thompson; and three great-grandchildren, Lucy Blythe Wardlaw, Lera Tweedy and J. Robert Thompson.

The family is grateful for the loving care of friends and especially for Joanne Brumfield, Amy and Jimmy Buford, Kathy Hobbs and Melissa LeCroix.

Pallbearers will be Dr. Charles Ashwander, Gregg Blythe, Tommy Daniels, Stan Evans, Don Mitchum, Bud Orr, Pat Smartt and Rick Thwing.

Honorary pallbearers include Charlie Moore, Gordon Christianson, Hoyt Condra, Gil Crane, Bob McAnnally, Dr. Malcolm Prewitt and The Moulton Street Culture Club.

The family requests memorial gifts to be given to churches of your choice or Refuge of Grace or The Neighborhood Christian Center or to the Monteagle Sunday School Assembly of Monteagle, Tennessee.
