Laura Smiley-Rogatz Obituary

SMILEY-ROGATZ - Laura Ellen, aged 59, on May 15, 2013, of Blue Bell, PA, from kidney cancer. Loving wife of Dr. William P. Rogatz. Adoring mother of Aiden Rogatz. Devoted daughter of Lois P. Smiley, artist and the late Dr. Douglas G. Smiley, surgeon. Sweetest sister to Andrea Smiley Higgins. Co-owner with husband, William, of Gwynedd Veterinary Hospital in Lansdale, PA. Laura's life was centered around family, friends, and animals. She grew up in Riverdale, NY (she remained a loyal Yankees fan), surrounded by cats, dogs, and other small animals. Her love of animals led her to Montana, where she graduated from Montana State University and owned a horse named "Snipe". She received a Master of Science degree in Ethology (animal behavior) at the University of Connecticut and then studied Molecular and Developmental Genetics at Fox Chase Cancer Center in PA. She graduated from the Cornell School of Veterinary Medicine in 1987, receiving the highly coveted "Gentle Doctor Award". After graduating, Laura did an internship and residency at the Animal Medical Center in NYC, culminating in her attaining Diplomate status in the Specialty of Internal Medicine (ACVIM), with particular interest in complex internal medicine cases and critical care medicine. Wherever Laura was, she had the uncommon ability to develop extraordinarily deep and loyal friendships. She will be sorely missed by family, friends, colleagues, Buffo, Little Baby, Quade, Blubs, and Schmalo. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Stray Cat Blues, Inc., P.O. Box 8, Colmar, PA 18915 (http://www.petfinder.com/sheltersistraycatblues.htrnl) or World Wildlife Fund, 1250 24th Street N.W., Washington, DC 20037 (http://woridwildlife.org) Services will be private.

I have been thinking about Laura lately as I was talking with the AMC crowd over the holidays ...I could not remember the song I so loved when I heard it at the memorial service so many years ago. Last night, I went to bed racking my brain...and fell asleep. In the early morning hours, I awakened and felt a presence and sat up and thought "There You'll Be" by Faith Hill, a beautiful lyric for my most kind, compassionate and loving friend and colleague...XO
I miss you so much especially when I see a chubby cat (you hated when I told you one of your patients overweight ) LOL. Rest easy my friend, you truly are the sweetest angel and so missed.

One of the sweetest woman I have met. She introduced me to Classical Music which I now have a great love for. She was a wonderful daughter to Lois. May she be at peace.

I think this may be the Laura Smiley I knew way back in 1972 - 75 when I was at Montana State University. She was always so kind, sensitive, intuitive and very intelligent. God speed Laura

i knew Laura in High School. She was always the kindest and gentlest person imaginable. From what I read in her obituary, she fulfilled every dream she spoke about in those days and times. Reading that she had passed away, at so young an age, is heartbreaking.

I can't stop thinking about Dr. Smiley. She was so kind and gentle to my cat, calling him my love and baby boy. The world has lost a wonderful person. Deepest sympathy to her family.

oh, i am so sorry to hear that Laura has died! we lived as neighbors for years when we were both younguns, in fact i was the honored "babysitter" for andrea and laura many times, and just loved visiting with Lois as well. i remember so well the house, the girls's bedrooms, and the magical rock garden with water flowing through it. how can Laura who is younger than i be dead before me? i feel deeply for Lois, knowing how agonizing it was for my mom, June, to live through Micki's death, but for Lois, i bet you will find a way with your art to work through it as you have so many of life's ups and downs. Andrea, how hard for you! i still miss Micki, though through practicing Yahrzeit, i bring her close in and can no longer tell where she begins and i end. still, it is alot to deal with! deep empathy and love from one once known as claudia (505 913-1904 call any time you wish)

We are saddened and would like to express our deepest sympathy to the family of Dr. Smiley. Our very sick cat,Tux, was transferred to Gwynedd and remained in the hospital under Dr. Smiley's loving care for 12 days in 2005. Thanks to her follow-up care, he is a healthy 12 year old. We have missed seeing Dr. Smiley and we hope fond memories will comfort and bless her family.

We will always remember Dr. Smiley for her loving kind ways and how she cared for Rocky when he was ill. She always would take the time to find out how he was doing and when he passed it was Dr Smiley who called to express her sympathy to us. Her talents and warmth will truly be missed through out the community.

I'm a bit stunned by the news of Laura's passing. This is the time of year (at the annual Vet Internal Medicine Meeting) that I always try to find my old friend. From our first meeting as classmates at Cornell Vet, and years together sharing family updates at ACVIM, it was always Laura's genuine warmth that shone through. She was always great with the animals, but watching her blossom through her family was a special joy. We all share in your loss.

Laura, you will be so missed. My human family and animal family adored you. You were loving, compassionate and the best. You kept our beloved Max alive for 2 extra years when others had given up hope. I will never forget how you reacted to his loss. You cried with us. You were the real deal. We loved you and will never forget you. Rest well.

Laura - I am so, so sad as I head to your funeral...You were such a loving and supportive friend - always asking me how I was doing even as you struggled with a bad cancer... I was embarrassed to even mention my trivial problems. I kept your wedding photo on my desk for the last few years and thought every day about you. You reminded me that life is precious... I will always hold you in my heart...
