I am fortunate to be celebrating 50 years of marriage with Bill's sister, and over those years I always enjoyed and looked forward to being with Bill. You knew when he entered the room, his stories , smile and twinkle in his eyes always had others moving towards him. Bill always asked others about their families and had a genuine interest. His ability to relate to young adults was special. I am not surprised how Bill was viewed by his fellow educators, for he raised the bar for excellence in the field of education and leadership. Bill, I miss you and frequently think of our good times together .

While beginning to plan for my 50th. reunion at Great Valley High School Class of 1965, I began looking up info about my favorite teachers. Sadly, I found Mr. Leary amoung those who had passed. He was my all-time favorite teacher. He taught me English, but even more he inspired me to go on and become an English teacher/Librarian for 33 years in Baltimore County, MD. I am now retired but think of him often. He always seemed to value my opinions and cared greatly for his students. His memory lives on in people like me who owe him a lot! Can't say enough about his kindness, humor and the encouragement he gave to me. Thanks Mr. Leary!

Barbara, I was shocked to read of Bill's passing. I know that the lose will come with great saddness each day but pray you will be strengthened by all the wonderful memories you shared and the love of your family. Working with you on house hunting and beyond I have always considered us friends and am sorry keeping up when people move always proves to be a challenge but I have often thought of your family and have always appreciated your friendship. We had fun and now I think of Bill's concern regarding ceiling heat in the shepherd hills house and how he came to love it. My deepest sympathy and prayers for you and the children.

As a teacher in East Penn, I admired Dr. Leary and always looked forward to his "first day" talks. He was a well-respected administrator and a personable gentleman. My condolences to your family.

I am sad to hear of Dr. Leary's passing. He was an inspiration to me from the first time I met him during my two hour East Penn interview. He knew all of the "rookies" names by the first day of school. When he hired me he said he "wanted a soldier for the level one foreign language classes." Much to the chagrin of others in the department, I never let him down. I thought of him often during my teaching career and will continue to do so fondly. He was a great advocate for education. So sorry for your loss.

Dr. Leary was my superintendent when I was first hired in Waynesboro in 1975. He was absolutely our best superintendent and a man I admired very much. Truly a man of great integrity and vision. What I remember best is that he made each member of the staff feel valued and important. I am so sorry for your family's loss.

Bill, my brother in law, was very unique, one of a kind. He had an exceptional skill with young adults, a role model for high integrity and values. He was an avid fan of Penn State and the University, his tailgates were always the best. Bill will live in our hearts and memories forever.

Barbara and family and all my Leary cousins.
Was shocked to get Dottie's e-mail about Bill. I'm so sorry. Growing up we did visit alot and Aunt Pearl (my Mother) always called him "Bull Leary".
Long time ago so can't remember how it started. Reading his obit I'm sure she would call him something quite different.
Thinking of you at this sad time.
Love,
Cousin Sis

Dr. Leary was the third superintendent that I worked with in East Penn. He was a man of strong convictions and unquestionable integrity. His vision of where East Penn was going was on target and history has proven that he was right about the growth. My condolences to Barbara, Gretchen, and his boys.

I have known the Leary family for as long as I can remember and it all began in Waynesboro. Thanks (Barb too) for putting up with Gretchen and all of her giggly little friends, such as myself, running through your house and roller skating in your basement. Thanks for the trips to the Jersey shore and always making me feel at home when I came to visit. Many good childhood memories!

I had the privilege of working as a teacher/counselor during Dr. Leary's tenure in the Waynesboro Area School District, while also serving as the "union" president. He was a MODEL educator and exceptional leader, and earned the respect of the entire staff during his tenure. I was sorry to see him leave. He truly cared about the welfare of the students and the professional and support staff of this district. A positive influence on my education career of 45 years.

The common denominator for Bil and me was our Boy Scouting days. Both in separate troops but constantly crossing paths scout activities. As such we would very often at reunions discuss the differences in yout experiences then and now.

Bill and I were close friends. He was tolerant, kind, strong and funny. He was also very smart. I only wish we could have lived closer together after high school, but we didn't. I shall miss him.
