Stephen Brett Obituary

Stephen E. Brett of Madison, Georgia died at home on March 5, 2025.

Steve was born in Brooklyn, NY on September 9, 1933 to Max and Dorothy Brett. When Steve was a young boy, the family relocated to Augusta; there he was educated in the Augusta public school system. He graduated from the Academy of Richmond County in 1949 and entered the University of Georgia. After two years in college, he enlisted in the US Navy. He spent three years during and after the Korean War as a Hospital Corpsman on the USS Glenn. After his time in the service, he returned to the University of Georgia and completed a degree in Pharmacy. He worked for SuperX Drug Co. as a staff pharmacist, and was steadily promoted over 20 years, ultimately becoming Director of New Stores in their corporate office in Cincinnati, OH.

In 1981, he left the company and purchased and operated Brett's Transfer and Storage, an affiliate of United Van Lines in Augusta, GA. Soon after moving to Augusta, he met and married the love of his life, Lynda Skelton Brett. Steve sold his business in 1998 and he and Lynda "retired" to Sky Valley, GA. He was able to reactivate his pharmacy license and worked part-time as a relief pharmacist for almost 20 more years.

In Augusta and Sky Valley, Steve enjoyed participating in community affairs by serving/and or leading several boards. He served as Mayor of Sky Valley for two terms and was chairman of the Rabun County Planning and Zoning commission. Steve and Lynda were founding members of the Sky Valley Country Club.

He was preceded in death by parents Max and Dorothy Brett, first wife Shirley Brett, sister Marian Unger (Irving), and stepson Clay Mitchell Skelton. He is survived by his wife Lynda; son Barry Brett (Cyndi), Newport, KY; daughter Rebecca Brett Seibel, Inman, SC; stepson Christopher E. Skelton (Julie), Madison, GA; stepdaughter Traci S. Moss (Preston), Augusta, GA; six grandchildren: Austin Brett, Alex Brett, Jake Brett, Carlee Morrow, John Patten Moss, and Brandon Skelton, and several great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Steve's Life will be held at a date to be announced later. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Clay Mitchell Skelton Scholarship Fund. Checks should be made payable to the ASU Foundation, with Clay Mitchell Skelton Scholarship Fund placed in the "For" space on bottom of check. Mail to: Augusta University Office of Advancement, 1120 15th St., FL-1000, Augusta, GA 30912.

Steve Brett and Linda have been wonderful friends of ours and also very involved in the communities in which they live everywhere they have been. The world is a better place because of them. Steve was a natural servant minded person. He loved people and took good care of everyone in his care. He was a good businessperson and a reliable person. I am sorry he is gone, but he lived a great and long life. Linda, I am sorry for your loss. God Bless.
