The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know 'Ward', but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

Kyle, Years from now you will be reading these words and will hopefully have a better understanding of the important role your father played in protecting our country from cowardly terrorists, like to one that took his life. I want you to know how very proud I was of your dad. He was a very brave soldier. He, like many others before and after him gave his all so that we can enjoy the freedoms that have. I wish you had known your dad like I did. He was a really tall guy with a great personality, a big smile, and a hugh heart. It sometimes seemed like he was larger than life itself. I know you will someday want to know who your dad really was. There are so many things I could tell you but the one thing I want you to remember is that your dad was a HERO. Many people use that term to describe their sports idols, rock stars they like, and for too many other lame reasons. Your dad though, he was a REAL hero.
I know you will not remember seeing the people that lined the sides of the road with their hands over their hearts as the funeral procession made it's way from the church to the cemetary. These were people who didn't even know your dad. He got a hero's welcome. I will never forget that sight. I know you will not remember being startled when the honor guard fired the 21 gun salute, or the general handing your Granddaddy Linder the flag that covered your dad's casket. You will have no memories of the bugler playing Taps and everyone around you in tears. While this was going on, you being the 3 year old that you are tried so hard to do something funny to make people laugh. You reminded me of your dad. He hated seeing people unhappy and always kept people laughing, even at his own expense. Kyle, as the only son of an only son, your dad left behind some very large shoes to fill, both literally and figuratively. I know as you grow up you will continue your dad's legacy. You will probably be tall. I can already tell you will have this great personality, you have this big smile, and a hugh heart just like your dad. I love you Kyle, Uncle Steve

No bond is as great as that between a parent and child. My deepest condolences are with you as you grieve.May God bless and heal the hurtful time as you overcome the grief of losing such a wonderful son and friend.

June 29, 2007

To the Family and Friends of this Soldier:
I will stand in grief with this soldier's family to honor him. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life, but I promised Brent that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.
We lost our son SFC Brent A. Adams on 12/1/05 and it seems like yesterday. I wish so badly there were things I could say to you right now to make the pain you are feeling go away, but I know first hand there simply are no words that will bring you the comfort and peace your heart aches for. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you go through this tragedy moment by moment and as you mourn this loss.
We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group none of us wanted to join, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. To be so proud of your loved one and so saddened at the same time is a mix of emotions very difficult to deal with as our hearts both burst with pride and pain together.
I am sorry that I never knew your soldier personally. While they can never be replaced, neither will they ever be forgotten. You must trust that sometime, someday the loving memories you have will help to sustain you and help you go on. This courageous soldier will forever be your Angel watching over you all for the rest of your lives. It's what brings me some measure of peace and comfort and I hope it will you as well.
To his family and friends in pain, I offer this comfort: When you find yourself in that dark sorrowful place, think not only of how you will miss him, but instead recall the years, days, hours and minutes gifted to you by his presence. The one thing that cannot be taken from you is your wonderful memories that now will mean more than ever.
If you ever want to talk, I'm only an e:mail away and would love for you to tell me more about your Hero.
God Bless this soldier and family who gave all and God Bless legacy.com for setting up this site where families can so quickly share their condolences and prayers with others like themselves.

Dear Darryl and Family,

I am so sorry that our family didn't make it to the Furneral Home or Service. I figured that Dad(Charles Garrett Sr) would say something about the services but he didn't, I dont guess he saw your Dad out. Just know that you and the family are in our thoughts and prayers. After Dad called me and told of the passing of Ward, I couldn't believe it. I believe it was back in Oct of last year when I was workig at Food Lion him coming in one night. When he first came in I didn't know who he was, however he came back in a couple more times that night and I just couldn't believe how much he had grown up. I am only 7 yrs older then him but I can remember seeing him at his Granparents playing outside and it just doesn't seem possible that he is gone. I know you are very proud of him and should be. He was a good kid and grew into an honorable young man. The morning after I got the news me and Brandi (my daughter) went and spent some time with your parents, cause they have been there for us since the lost of Mom and they think of Brandi as another grandchild. I know that he come for a loving family and I am glad I got to know him if only for a brief moment. I know that he was welcomed into Heaven by his Mother and Christ with open arms. I will remember him everyday and Thank God for sending a young man like him to lay down his life for our freedom. You had a wonderful son and grandson in this young man. If you or your parents need anything please feel free to call Dad even if just to talk. May God carry you through this time and keep you safe in his arms.

My thoughts and prayers are with you all in this terrible time you are going through. I only knew Ward as a young boy, when he went to school and played ball with a young boy which we took into our home. He is the one who first informed me of this. He was a friend of Wards during their school years and was very hurt to hear about this. He asked me to let you know that he is very sorry this happened and wanted to send his sympathy to you. He thought a lot of you also, Mr. Linder; remembering you from their times at the ball field in Mountain View.He is not in the area and not able to attend. His name is McGarrett McManus. May God see you through this. I will continue to pray for you all.

I would like to thank each and everyone of you who have taken the time to post a message to our family. Ward Linder was my sister, Angela Linder's,only child. She was killed in a motorcycle accident 7 years ago. Along with his father Darryl and step-mother Melinda and too many other family members to list, he was loved dearly and we will all miss him for along time to come. We all however, are so very proud of him and will always remember the ultimate sacrifice that he made for us and all of you. He was a true soldier who believed in the fight for this great country's freedom. Although his watch is now over, his legacy of honor will live on. He will always be a HERO and we thank God for the time that we had him here, on earth, with us.

Dear Darryl and Melinda, I never had the honor of meeting Ward, but I did have the priviledge of attended school with Darryl. I am sure that Ward inherited the fine qualities that I admired in Darryl and Angela. Ward's values are loudly displayed in his unwavering sacrifice in the name of America. He will be remembered with love and we thank him for his attendance to duty. My prayers are with you all.

I was a friend and co-worker of Ward's mother, Angela, at First Security Co. Angela's departure from this earth was also abrupt and tragic but I am very, very sure that she was standing, arms outstretched, to greet her beloved son, Ward. They are together again. My heart felt sympathy to all the family & friends who are missing Ward, one of America's heroic defenders.

Dear Darryl, Milinda, Nicole, and Kyle,

Our son Jerry was in Ward's unit in Iraq. Although we never had the privledge to meet him we feel that we knew him through Jerry. They were soul mates.

He was always there to listen to Jerry and help him when times were tough. What a God-sent he was in the vast desert of Iraq.

Darryl's passing has left a giant hole in Jerry's heart and we feel like we have also lost a loved one.

We know you are proud of your son, fiance, grandson and father. So are we. He is truly an American Hero and will always be remembered as one by us.

May God bless you and keep you in the palm of his hand. He is now in the best of company!

With love and prayers,

Jerry, Kathi, Jerry, and Patty Stravia
