Eugene John Mayer

Eugene John Mayer, age 89, of Avon, passed away in his home surrounded by his loving family on Sunday, July 2, 2023.Born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio, Gene was married in September 1958 to his loving wife, Betty. They started their family in Cleveland and subsequently moved to Lakewood, then to Avon in 1969, where he lived the rest of his life. He retired from Cleveland Electric Illuminating in 1993 after 40 years of dedicated service. He is survived by his children, Paula Boggs (Randy, deceased), Roberta Muzik (Raymond), David Mayer (Karen) and Glen Mayer. He is also survived by eight loving grandchildren, Katie Barrett (Dennis), Jerrod Boggs, Colleen Baldwin (Jacob), Matthew Muzik (Mia Haslage-soon to be Muzik), Tyler Muzik (Rachel), Lucas Mayer, Max Mayer, and Joshua Mayer; and two great-grandchildren, Owen Muzik and Elliott Barrett. He is also survived by one brother-in-law, John Brown in North Carolina and a loving niece, Diane Wells in Florida.Gene was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Betty (nee Brown) in 2015; his parents, William (1976) and Pauline Mayer (1955); step-mother, Oliva Mayer (1987) and brother, Richard Mayer (1965).There was nothing Gene loved more than spending time with his wife, watching his children and grandchildren grow up, doing puzzles on the dining room table, and watching his garden grow (and subsequent canning of the harvest). His latest joys were his two great-grandchildren which brought him such delight! He also had deep affection for his dogs, Charlie and Buddy.A funeral mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, July 11 at 11:00 am at St. Peter Parish, 3655 Oberlin Ave., Lorain, OH, Fr. Craig M. Hovanec, Pastor, officiating and a luncheon will be held immediately following at the American Croatian Club on Oberlin Ave., Lorain. Cremation was handled under the direction of Reidy-Scanlan-Giovannazzo Funeral Home in Lorain.The family would also like to thank the caring individuals from Infinite Helping Hands (specifically Vivian and Trish) and Hospice of the Western Reserve for their care and support through these last few months.
