John Matotek Obituary

Lorain: John E. Matotek, 80, of Lorain, died Sunday December 10, 2023 at Mercy New Life Hospice in Lorain after a brief illness.He was born November 20, 1943 in Beckley, West Virginia and had resided in Lorain most of his life.John taught Math at Hawthorne and Irving Elementary Schools in Lorain and served as a counselor at Admiral King High School and Southview High School. Several times, his students voted him as their favorite Teacher of the Year. He retired in 1998 after 31 years with Lorain city schools.John was a member of St Peter Parish and the former Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Lorain. He bowled and golfed in several leagues.He is survived by his sons: John Matotek of Elyria, Steve Matotek of Amherst, and Tim Riley of Elyria; grandchildren: Bryan & Chelsea Matotek, mother Evolie Matotek (nee Comer) and brother Tom Matotek of Lorain. He was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years Marcella "Marcie" Matotek (nee Marmol) on January 23, 2023 and his father John S. Matotek.The family will receive friends Thursday December 14, 2023 from 3:00-7:00 pm at the Gluvna- Shimo- Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway, Lorain. Funeral services will be held Friday December 15, 2023 at 9:00 am in the funeral chapel followed by the mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 am at St Peter Parish, 3501 Oberlin Ave, Lorain. The Rev. Craig Hovanec, pastor, will preside. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery in Lorain.Memorial contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society.Online condolences can be made at www.gluvnashimohromada.com.

Mr. Matotek was one of my favorite teachers at Lorain Admiral King High school. He was very patient, kind and helpful. His smile continued to be shared with our rough world long after his retirement. Thank you for the impact you had on so many of Lorain's students. May you rest easy.
