Jose Escalera, age 90, of Lorain, Ohio passed away on Thursday, July 28, 2022. He was born on December 4, 1931 in Vega Alta, Puerto Rico to Jose Valentin Escalera and Mercedes Ortega Castro.He graduated from high school in Puerto Rico and continued his education earning his degree from the College Mayaguez, in Puerto Rico. He and his family moved from Puerto Rico to live in New York, New Jersey, California, Florida, and Ohio.Jose served in the United States Army from 1951- 1953 and also served with the United States Navy from 1953- 1957. He made his career in automotive sales with International Trucks from 1960-1977 and retired from Rick Chevrolet in Vineland, New Jersey in 1983, after working there for 3 years.He enjoyed playing bingo and dominos.He is survived by his children, Jose Antonio “Joe” (Miriam Zamaha) Escalera, Angel Rafael (Mildred) Escalera, Miriam (Carlos) Gonzalez, Myrna (Samuel) Soto, Myrta (Ernesto Santiago) Escalera, Eddie (Jackie) Escalera, Maria Isabel Ortiz, and step-daughter, Lucy (Joaquin) Roman; 24 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; siblings, Jose Antonio Escalera Ortega, Modesto Escalera Ortega, Rafael Escalera Ortega, Maria Merceded Escalera Ortega, Guli Escalera, Amado Escalera, Negro Escalera, and Elsy Escalera.Jose was preceded in death by his wife, Luz Marina Santos Escalera; son, Jose Luis Escalera; and his parents, Jose Valentin Escalera, and Mercedes Ortega Casto.The family will receive friends on Wednesday, August 3, 2022 from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. in the Dovin and Reber Jones Funeral & Cremation Center, 1110 Cooper Foster Park Road, Amherst.
