Leslie George Obituary

Amherst: Leslie J. “Les” George, 77, of Amherst, passed away unexpectedly in his home on Wednesday, February 17, 2021. He fought a courageous battle with cancer the past 10 years and never stopped despite what life threw at him. He was born on May 24, 1943 in Lorain, Ohio. He graduated from Admiral King High School and was a lifelong resident of both Lorain and Amherst.Les had a strong work ethic we all can learn from, beginning as a teenager working at Meyer Goldberg grocery store in Lorain to serving the city of Lorain as a police officer from 1966-1999 where he was well-known and respected by his peers, leaders, and citizens alike. He had a love for service and was a dedicated officer, he served many roles including President of FOP, Traffic commissioner, narcotics detective and firearms instructor. Thirty-four years in uniform wasn’t enough for Les, so he joined the Amherst Police Department where he served as a part-time patrolman from 2001-2018 concluding a 50-year career in public service. Les also operated a snow-plowing business for many years. He was a life member of the Amherst Sportsmen’s Club, Beavercreek Hunt Club, American Legion # 118, Amherst Eagles, and the Lorain Fraternal Order of Police. He enjoyed being on the go, making you laugh, meeting for coffee, spending time with family, friends and grandchildren, hunting, fishing, boating, golfing, and attending gun shows and car shows. For many years Les also taught CCW classes. He is survived by his daughters: Traci George and Kellye George, grandchildren: Taylor Gonos and Ethan George; step-grandchildren: Spencer Jolley and Chase Jolley, stepdaughter Danielle Jolley, sister Marie Stack and many cousins and friends he was very close with. My father lived in our family home on West 33rd St. until he passed in his mid-nineties. Les would always plow his driveway after it snowed. And, he would never accept any payment. Whenever Les drove by (his mother lived two doors down), he'd wave and honk if my dad was sitting outside. And, from the stories my dad shared, Les treated all with the same respect. May your family find comfort in the promise that life is everlasting.

The George family lived on my street, W 33rd. My brother, Jerry Cullen and Les were best friends. I followed those two around all the time cause I knew they’d were always have fun...or getting into mischief. I have lots of memories from those days. Later in life, my brother was a police officer with Les...more stores for me to remember. Then after my brother, Jerry passed away I would often run into Les down at Beaver or other places and we could always reminisce and laugh and laugh at the old stories. RIP Les, I will never forget the good times. Deepest Sympathy to your family and other friends that will miss you.

My condolences. Les, not only a great guy but also a long time friend. From "kids" riding bicycles in the neighborhood, through school (hanging out at Yala's) and on to adulthood. In life we (all) went our separate ways but it was always a pleasure to run into you and talk of the old days and times. One of the great guys of "our time." RIP Les.

I have a lot of great memories of our time working at Goldberg's . He was a good friend and a very hard worker. One time he stopped at our house in uniform and got our daughter to eat her supper. Heaven is getting a real cool dude. Our condolences to the family. RIP Les. Bob & Anna Marie Andress.
