Violet Marie "Vi" Mortensen

1931 - 2018

Violet Marie Mortensen, age 86, of Milan, Ohio passed away peacefully Sunday, January 28, 2018.
She was born November, 10, 1931 in Ashland, Ohio to Ocal and Mary Gerwig. She was raised and worked on a farm in Ashland, along with five siblings. During the winter the family farmed in Apopka, FL., where Violet graduated from High School in 1949. She got married in Ashland, Ohio in 1951 to Carl Mortensen, and raised a family of four while working on the Mortensen farm and greenhouse in Milan for 66 years.
She ran a greenhouse and a gift-shop since 1975, and had a business at Jamie's Flea Market two days a week for many years.
She was a very hard worker, creative and passionate about plants. She loved sharing her knowledge and creating beautiful displays and arrangements for her customers and friends. Violet also liked to read and was an avid Cleveland Indians fan. She worked until the age of 85 when Mortensen's Greenhouse was sold in May 2017.
Violet is survived by her children, Melinda (Pat) Beatty, Randy Mortensen, Sheree (Eric) Stolzenberg, and Jeff Mortensen; brothers, Bill (Shirley) Gerwig, David (Vicki) Gerwig, and Dennis (Cindy) Gerwig; sisters, Gloria Heffelfinger and Marlene (Chuck) Turk; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Violet was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Carl Mortensen .
Visitation will be from 10:30 a.m. until 12 p.m. with a memorial service following on Saturday, April 7, 2018 at Edison Memorial United Methodist Church, 10 E. Church St., Milan, OH.
The Mortensen Family would like to recognize and thank the many compassionate and caring people who helped Violet when she faced various challenges in her later years.
