Ruth Hlad Obituary
Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, September 21, 2024, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Flensburg, MN, at 11:00 A.M., with Father Ben Kociemba officiating. Visitation will be from 10:00-11:00 A.M., on Saturday, September 21, 2024, at the church prior to the Mass. Caring for Ruth and her family is the Shelley Funeral Chapel in Little Falls.
Ruth Clara Birchem was born on October 16, 1945 in Sobieski, MN to the late Joseph and Susan (Trutwin) Birchem. She left the family farm at age 15 and moved to the Twin Cities to help her sister. In 1963, she graduated from Columbia Heights High School. Ruth was united in marriage to Larry Hlad on August 5, 1963. They lived in the Twin Cities and Ruth worked in financial record keeping. In 1973, they purchased a small farm outside of Randall. Ruth began working for the Little Falls School District in 1974 in various administrative roles and retired after 30 years with the district. After retirement, she kept busy helping with her brother Jim's business.
Ruth's greatest joy was spoiling her grandchildren, Ayla and Nora. This included taking them to Subway when Mom and Dad wouldn't, taking them shopping, and letting them run across the road to visit whenever they wanted to. Ruth also enjoyed crocheting beautiful blankets for family and friends, gardening, watching Twins baseball and playing cards. Ruth was devoted to her family and friends and lived her life in love and kindness. She will be missed by all who knew her.
Ruth is survived by her husband, Larry Hlad; son, David (Amanda) Hlad; grandchildren, Ayla and Nora Hlad; brother, Jim (Kathy) Birchem; sister, Mary Birchem; sisters-in-law, Doris Birchem and Gloria Birchem.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Susan Birchem; siblings, Ben Birchem, Elroy Birchem, Douglas Birchem, Lorraine Bergren, Mona Brezinka, Joseph Birchem, Irene Roerick, Loretta Larson, Betty Symanietz, John Birchem.
