Daniel Coldwell Obituary

MOUNT GILEAD - Daniel Francis Coldwell, beloved husband, father and grandfather, age 77 of Mount Gilead passed away Sunday, June 22, 2025, at Westerville Senior Living. He was born on November 8, 1947, in Galion to Loren C. and Virginia L. (Jackson) Coldwell.

Dan was a proud 1965 graduate of Mount Gilead High School where he played varsity Baseball. Following High School, he attended Eastern Kentucky University until joining the Air National Guard in 1967 & was activated to Korea during the Vietnam War with an honorable discharge in 1972.

He married his high school love, Doris Chapman on August 29, 1969. The two were married 56 years and shared their home on Pine Drive in Mt Gilead since 1972.

In addition to his wife, Dan is survived by his loving children: Rachel (Lucas) Bauman of Westerville and Luke (Larry Hayman) Coldwell of Columbus/Athens and; two granddaughters: Savannah & Gwendolyn Bauman; four siblings: Bonnie (Steve) Wiseman of Mount Gilead, Larry (Jan) Coldwell of Killbuck, Dave (Lisa) Coldwell of Salineville, Suzi (Ric) Lyle of Mount Gilead; as well as close in-laws, many nieces, nephews, and extended family.

He was a member of the Williamsport United Methodist Church and for many years coached and played on the church softball team. His competitive nature came through during these successful winning seasons. He also coached the RN Sautter softball team and spent multiple years coaching Luke in both T-ball and Little League. His passion for sports and sports card collecting started at a young age and led him to being a lifelong avid card and memorabilia collector. Going back to the 1970's, he enjoyed traveling with dear friends to sports card shows around Ohio and other states.

Dan served as a Mount Gilead mail carrier for 38 years, a job which he loved. Following his retirement in 2004, he enjoyed assisting with local auctions and maintaining landscaping both at his home and for others. Dan was dubbed the unofficial "mayor" of Pine Drive, always helping to mow lawns, shovel sidewalks, and more throughout the neighborhood.

He was extremely faithful and loyal to the people he was closest to. When Rachel and Luke were growing up, Dan treasured time spent with the Pearce family, sharing in the journey of raising their children together. Their families were the best of friends. As well, he, along with friends and neighbors gathered every Thursday evening for "Clubhouse". He treasured those nights and hoped the tradition would continue.

Always a sports enthusiast, Dan suffered faithfully as he followed the Cleveland Browns, Indians/Guardians, and Cavaliers. Ohio State football took top honors though. The most recent OSU National Championship in January was extra special as he suspected it would be his last to see.

Dan's proudest moment was able to send his two children to the undergraduate school of their choice, Denison University and watch them both graduate. They will forever be grateful for this.

Above all, Dan always valued honesty, fairness, and equality. He always stood for what was morally and ethically right and made it a point to help those in need. Dan always demonstrated integrity and compassion even when it was difficult.

As per Dan's wishes, funeral services are not being held. A Celebration of Dan's life is being held on Saturday, August 2nd from 3-6pm in one of his treasured spaces, the backyard of his home at 299 Pine Drive. Guests are encouraged to wear their favorite sports-related attire, and a Memorial Tribute will begin at 4pm for those wanting to share some of their favorite memories or stories. Some of his favorite food and beverages will be provided as we reflect, reminisce, and honor Dan. Limited parking is available in the neighborhood and overflow parking is available at Morrow County Developmental Disabilities (Whetstone) at 406 Bank Street.

Those wishing to make a memorial contribution are asked to donate in his name to the Mount Gilead Athletic Boosters or the Williamsport United Methodist Church.
