William B. "Bill" Beckel, age 71, of Mount Gilead, died Sunday evening, July 19, 2015, at the Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus.
He was born on May 10, 1944 in Marion, OH, the son of the late Ralph and Margaret Rhea (Smith) Beckel. He graduated from Marion Harding High School in the Class of 1963.
In 1964 Bill enlisted in the U.S. Army and served three years before receiving his honorable discharge.
On July 16, 1981, Bill married Elsie Louise Bowen in Marion and they have shared the last 34 years together.
He worked for McClain E-Z Pack in Galion for many years, retiring in 1991.
Bill could always be found spending time at VFW 8054. He was also a member of American Legion 754 and enjoyed participating in the turkey shoots.
He will be dearly missed by his wife, Elsie, of Mount Gilead; three daughters: Pam Steiner, Paula (Michael Whitt) Hall, both of Marion, Shellie (Norman) Spurback of Franklin, NC; two step-sons: Roy Friend, Mike (Jessica) Friend, both of Marion; 6 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Gary Beckel.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 1, 2015, at the VFW Post 8054, 4960 State Route 61, Mount Gilead, OH 43338. Military honors will be provided by the Active Duty U.S. Army, VFW Post 8054 and AmVets Post 87.
