Mary Towner Obituary

Mary Elizabeth (Hapgood) Towner, FISHERS-New York: Mary Elizabeth Towner passed away Sunday, April 20, 2014 at age 89. Liz is survived by her loving husband of 68 years, William, two daughters, Susan Checcino and Martha Towner; five grandchildren Christopher, Scott, Daniel, Kara, and Michael; brother, William Hapgood of Okinawa; nephews, William and Larry; and many dear and treasured friends. She was born in Philadelphia, PA on May 1st, 1924 (Say Hey, it's the first of May, time for Lizzie's birthday). She graduated from Webster High School, where she met Bill and later married. Liz's career included raising her daughters, working on the tarmac parking aircraft for American Airlines, diving coach for Perkin's swim club, working with a chemist, and managing the Boehm Gallery for Sibley's. Liz also had an entrepreneurial talent. In the late 60's, she partnered with her sister in law, Barbara, to open a gift shop, The Golden Egg, in Victor. She was also the treasurer for the family business, Towner Brothers. With all of this activity, Liz still had time to serve on the Republican Committee in Victor, an advisor to the Mendon Pony Club, Rochester Museum, Rochester Art Gallery, Rochester Philharmonic, Rochester Ballet and a member of the Chatterbox Club. Family and friends are invited to a service on Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Christ Episcopal Church, 36 Main Street, Pittsford. Gifts in Liz's memory may be directed to the Happy Tails Ontario County Animal Shelter, 2976 County Road 48, Canandaigua, NY 14424. luceyvanvoorhisfuneralhome.com

Martha,
Sorry to hear about your mom. I remember her well and the time I came to babysit you two girls when they went away. Also, loved the shop she and Barbara had.
Last time I saw you was at Lock, Stock and Barrel a few years ago.
Your second grade teacher,
Kathie Osborne May

Dear Susan,
I am so sorry to hear about your Mom. Thinking about her brought back a lot of memories...spending the night at your house, jello, jello and more jello, Cold Duck and Eggs at the cottage, the Invader, all the things we weren't supposed to do (but we turned out just fine!) and who can forget white gloves at Cotillion? And your Mom being so good natured about everything. Let's see, that would have been 40+ years ago! I just wanted to write to send my prayers to you and your family and to let you know how fondly I think of our friendship so many years ago. With love,
