Brett Blackwell Obituary

Brett Blackwell
03/07/1957 - 01/02/2025
Brett Kyle Blackwell, formerly of Midland, Texas, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Thursday, January 2, 2025 at age 67 while visiting a friend in Tyler, Texas. Brett was born on March 7, 1957, in Midland, Texas to Patricia Lea Steuart Blackwell and Richard Carlton Blackwell. Brett was well known for his outstanding athletic ability in basketball and baseball. He was in the Class of 1975 at Midland Lee High School and played basketball for Coach Paul Steuckler and baseball for Coach Ernie Johnson. Brett went on to play both sports at Baylor University and McLennan JC.
Brett always exhibited an outgoing personality with his humor and laughter, accumulating friends wherever he went. After his college athletic days Brett became somewhat of a nomad, living in Montana, Nevada, Connecticut, Oregon, and Washington, as well as Austin, Texas and Ruidoso, Albuquerque, and Roswell in New Mexico. Probably his favorite place was when he lived a few months in old Mexico. During his nomadic lifestyle, Brett worked at ski areas, as a bartender, school teacher and construction worker. Along the way, he took time to complete his college studies at the University of New Mexico, earning a Bachelor degree in Economics.
During Brett's last few years, while living in Roswell, New Mexico, he experienced a considerable amount of debilitating health problems. Although he always marched to a different drummer we loved him dearly and will forever miss his presence.
Brett is survived by his parents; Pat and Richard Blackwell of Midland, siblings; Dr. Richard Blackwell Jr. and wife Ruth Ann of Leander, Texas, Kelley Ann Blackwell of Midland, and Barry Blackwell of Midland. Brett, also, leaves behind nine nephews and nieces along with fourteen great nephews and nieces.
No services are planned.
Arrangements are under direction of Serenity Lighthouse Mortuary and Birdsong Cremations of Tyler, TX.

My condolences to the Blackwell family! I worked with Brett Blackwell at the Alternative Learning Center (Austin ISD) in Austin Texas. He made a great impact among the students ( special education students too). He was well respected among colleagues and students. He kept in touch with me over the years. We last talked in December 2024 which when he didn't respond for the New Years, I new because he prepared me that he was crossing over. He loved his dad and always spoke highly of him with respect. Brett and I spoke often these last couple of months about things, families, and of course our time ALC in Austin working with trouble students.
When I didn't here from Mr. Brett Blackwell, I search the internet and found this website of his passing. I will not forget what you taught me.
We love and miss you.
RIP
