Edward Schafer Obituary

Edward Eugene (Gene) Schafer was born in Nowata, Oklahoma on October 29, 1933 to Elsie Wilhite and William Franklin Schafer. He died November 6, 2021 after a short stay in the hospital. Gene attended school in Madill, Oklahoma and Zenith, Kansas before moving to Midland with his family in 1949. He graduated from Midland High School in 1952. He continued his education at The University of Texas in Austin graduating with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree. He was a member of the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity. On August 17, 1957 Gene married Margaret (Peggy) Simmons of Midland. Immediately after they married, they moved to Augusta, Georgia where Gene served in the United States Army. The couple returned to Midland upon his completion of service. Gene's business career centered in the oil field chemical industry. He worked for Cardinal Chemical Company for over 20 years. Then he started a chemical consulting business which he continued until his retirement. He was an active member of several professional associations including the National Associate of Corrosion Engineers. Gene's family describes him as a loyal, thoughtful and loving man. He was strong in his faith. He lived his life with honor, dignity and integrity. Survivors include his wife, Margaret (Peggy) Schafer of Midland, his daughter Margaret Culbertson of Dallas, and his granddaughter Kaley Latham Culbertson of Dallas. Gene is preceded in death by his parents of Sanger, TX, his brother William Donald Schafer of Santa Fe, NM, and his brother Gerald (Max) Schafer of Richardson, TX. At Gene's request, a private family graveside service will be held at Resthaven cemetery. Reverend Steve Schorr of the First Presbyterian Church will officiate. Casual visitation for friends with the family will be held from 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 10th at The Branch at Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home, 3800 N Big Spring St Midland, Texas. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the First Presbyterian Church, 800 W Texas, Midland, Texas 79701or charity of choice. Arrangements are under the direction of Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home & Crematory of Midland. Online condolences may be made at www.npwelch.com.
