Ray Barrett Obituary

Ray Reed Barrett, Jr.
10/08/1933 - 06/11/2025
Ray Reed Barrett, Jr. of Midkiff, Texas, transitioned peacefully in his sleep to his eternal home on June 11, 2025, at the age of 91. He was born on October 8, 1933, in Plainview, Texas to Margaret Ann Morriss Barrett and Ray Reed Barrett, Sr. Ray exemplified a life rooted in integrity, hard work, and a profound dedication to family, faith, and country living.
A graduate of San Angelo High School, Ray made his mark on the fields of baseball and football. He also was a proud graduate of Texas A&M University class of '55 with a degree in Agricultural Economics. Ray proudly wore the #60 uniform of the legendary Coach Bear Bryant's "Junction Boys" during his college football career. His athletic prowess led to recognition as a Scholastic All-American and an esteemed member of the "All Opponent Team" selected by Oklahoma State.
After graduation Ray married Patricia Tippett Barrett, his childhood sweetheart, on November 12, 1955. They met in sixth grade when Ray's family moved across the street from the Tippett's house. Following their wedding, Ray and Patricia moved to Midkiff, Texas. Ray embarked on a successful career in farming and ranching. With a steadfast commitment to hard work, he grew his business over the years, cultivating cotton fields, managing a thriving pecan orchard, and raising cattle and sheep. Ray's dedication to agriculture not only provided for his family but also contributed to the local economy, showcasing his deep-rooted connection to the land and community.
Ray's faith was the cornerstone of his life. Ray served as Deacon and Sunday School Superintendent at the First Baptist Church of Midkiff, later becoming a cherished member of First Baptist of Greenwood, TX. His commitment to education was evident with the over 20 years of dedicated service as a past Treasurer and an active member of the Rankin ISD School Board. Ray also contributed significantly as the President of the Texas Pecan Growers Association and as a founding member of the Midkiff Coop.
Ray was preceded in death by the love of his life and wife of almost 52 years, Patricia in 2007. He was also preceded in death by his infant son, Gilmer Ray Barrett, his son, James Morriss Barrett, and his sister Lila Beall Barrett Compton. He is survived by his beloved daughter, Sarah Barrett Hilgart of Dallas; his son, Richard Barrett, and daughter-in-law Denise of Arlington; his daughter-in-law Carol Hickman Barrett (now married to Mike Ashfield) of College Station; his treasured grandchildren: Tricia Hilgart Glander, James "JJ" Hilgart, Heather Barrett, Jackie Barrett McMillan (Jeremy), Nathan Barrett (Kelly), Jodi Barrett, Tiffany Barrett Hart (Josh); his precious great-grandchildren: Ellie, Callen, Camdyn and Emma McMillan; and James and Margaret Barrett.
Ray was a man whose unwavering faith, clear vision, and deep devotion enriched the lives of those around him. His legacy of kindness, integrity, and strength leaves an indelible mark on all who had the privilege to know him. His spirit will continue to guide us, a testament to a life lived with purpose, generosity, and steadfast love.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Wednesday, July 2, 2025, at Glen Meadows Baptist Church of San Angelo, TX, at 11 a.m., followed by a catered barbeque lunch at noon.
The family would like to extend our deepest gratitude to Ray's long time caregivers Mary Laster and J.J. Hilgart. We also appreciate the care and compassion shown by Glen Meadows Baptist Church and Harper Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to Alzheimer's research, Buckner's Boy Ranch, or Samaritan's Purse.
