Sue Slaton-Weis Obituary

Sue Slaton-Weis, 74, of Odessa, passed away on August 19, 2015, at her home peacefully after an extensive battle with an illness. Johnnie Sue was born on July 27, 1941 in Humphries, Tennessee to Loyd and Thelma Gibbons. Sue was the first of seven children. Sue's greatest joy in life were her three boys. They were the shining light in her life. She raised them to be dedicated, self-sufficient, successful men. Sue's greatest education accomplishment was going back to school in her mid-fifties and obtaining her GED and Associates Degree from Odessa College. Sue's wisdom through life experiences led her to the employment position of the very first Crisis Intervention Unit Director of Midland County Sheriff's Department under Sheriff Gary Painter, Midland, Texas. She was the CIU Director until she retired. Red hair, slender build, 5'6", Sue was a model for Neiman Marcus Fashion Clothing in her young adult years. Her most memorable places of travel were abroad to Italy and Greece. Sue was always well-dressed for any occasion, as she loved fancy clothes, shoes, boots, and jewelry. She was a natural artist. She drew the cartoon characters for Andrews Mustangs, during football season, when her middle son, Marty Slaton, was one of the top star football players. She loved to dress up jogging suits by designing beautiful and casual designs in puff paint, fabric, and jewels. Sue married the love of her life, Rod K Weis, on June 14, 2003. They lived in Midland, Texas, where both were employed. Sue was the CIU Director of the Sheriff's Office and Rod was employed by MISD and retired from teaching after retiring from the United States Navy as a Senior Chief Officer, salvage diver during the Vietnam Era. They shared their home with Sox and Pepper, their beloved schnauzers. Sue always left a special mark on just about everyone she met. Unique and charismatic, Sue will be greatly missed by her family and all those she helped and befriended with many cherished memories. Sue was preceded in death by her parents and her dearly loved husband, Rodney Weis. She is survived by her three sons and their families, Kevin and Sharon Slaton, Marty and Alicia Slaton, and Byron and Susan Slaton, all of Odessa, Texas; eight grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren; six younger siblings, Barbara Strong and Beverly Cleveland, both of Tyler, Texas, Loyd Gibbons of Riverside, California, Nick Gibbons of Wills Point, Texas, Rick Gibbons of Bullard, Texas, and Jackie Gibbons, whereabouts unknown; and numerous nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, the family wishes memorials be donated to the Crisis Intervention Unit Midland Sheriff's Department, Midland, Texas. There is no service information at this time. Arrangements are under the direction of Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home & Crematory of Midland. Online condolences can be made at www.npwelch.com.
