MOUNT AIRY — After a courageous ten year fight with cancer, Franklin D Gravely, of Mount Airy, won the final victory when he passed from this earth to his Heavenly Home on Saturday, September 12, 2015 at his home. His precious Penny, Dean and wife of fifty years, Linda and his special Katie surrounded him with love. Mr. Gravely was born in Surry County on July 25, 1941 to James Cephus and Ruby Elmo Wilson Gravely. He was retired from Pike Electric. Franklin will be dearly missed not only by his devoted family but also by his many, many friends, neighbors and church family. Also surviving are brothers and sisters-in-law, Danny and Jeanette Gravely and Bobby and Gladys Wilson; nieces and nephews, Leon and Dee Wilson, Lynn and Frank Sheppard and Chris Gravely; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Clarence and Nelda Goings, Gray and Roena Goings and Ann Pack; his "very special second mama" Helen Bartley; and numerous cousins. In addition to his parents, Mr. Gravely was preceded in death by his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Henley and Zella Goings; a brother-in-law, Carl Pack and his "special second Daddy" Jim Bartley. Funeral services will be held at 4:00 PM Tuesday, September 15, 2015 at Moody Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Kirk Spicer. Burial will follow in Flat Top Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday night from 6:00 to 8:00 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Flat Top Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery Trust at P.O. Box 724, Dobson, NC 27017. "Franklin had a very special relationship with his oncologist, Dr. Susan Hines, the family would like to thank her and the staff of Piedmont Hematology/Oncology at both the Mount Airy and Winston-Salem locations, Dr. Slate Hubbard and Mountain Valley Hospice for the wonderful care and compassion given to Franklin."
