James Martin Sr.

Mr. James Earl Martin Sr., age 84, of Mount Airy, passed away Wednesday evening, November 19, 2025, at his residence with his loving family by his side. Mr. Martin was born in Surry County on December 2, 1940, to the late Tom Martin and Thelma Harris Martin. For most of his adult life, Earl owned and operated a traveling photography business. Through his work he met countless families and created memories that will be cherished for generations. Earl was a faithful member of New Hope Baptist Church. For many years Earl served as a deacon and led the choir at Woodland Baptist Church. His faith was not loud or showy-it was steady, compassionate, and lived out through the way he treated others. He had a deep love for golf, spending many happy hours on the course and talking about his favorite rounds. His long daily walks were part of his routine for years, giving him time to reflect, enjoy the outdoors, and greet everyone he passed. Earl never met a stranger; he had a natural gift for conversation and could make friends anywhere. Above all, Earl's life was defined by love-love for his family, love for his friends, and love for the Lord. His gentle spirit, his devotion to Faye, and his steady, reassuring presence will be deeply missed. Left to cherish his memories are his wife, Faye Slate Martin; daughter and son-in-law, Sherry Brown and Richard; son, James Brown Jr., and Delana Shinault; grandchildren, Angel McGregor and Chris, Drew Billings, Britany Martin, Nicole Martin; 9 great-grandchildren, brother and sister-in-law, Edsel Martin and Susan Gregory Martin. In addition to his parents, Earl was preceded in death by his son, James Randy Martin; sister, Mary Lee Brewer. A private family graveside service will be held. The family had a celebration of life gathering Saturday, November 22, 2025, beginning at 12:00 PM at New Hope Baptist Church.
