LaVerne Roberts Obituary

LaVerne F. Roberts CHARLOTTE - LaVerne F. Roberts of Charlotte passed away on March 2, 2014. She was 89. LaVerne was born with the voice of an angel, and no one who heard her sing ever forgot the experience. She studied opera at the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music and with the famed soprano, Helen Jepsen of the Metropolitan Opera, sang with the Cincinnati and Charlotte Symphonies, in concerts, operas and in churches in the Ohio area, New Jersey and New York, and finally in Charlotte. She became one of the most sought after voice teachers for many years and was a soloist and choir member at Trinity Presbyterian Church until her final days. She gave the world, and especially her children, the gift of music for which they will be eternally grateful. Her legacy lives in the voices and instruments of her daughter, sons and her many students and can be heard any time one of them plays or sings. She is survived by her daughter, Susan Roberts Knowlson of Charlotte, her sons, Michael Roberts and wife Mary Lou of Colorado Springs, Gordon Roberts of Ocean Isle Beach and Rob Roberts of Boone. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Brooke, Emily and Lindsey Roberts and Emma and Selby Knowlson. Services will be held at Trinity Presbyterian Church, 3115 Providence Rd., Charlotte on Friday at 2pm. A reception will follow. Voice students, colleagues and friends in music are invited to join their voices with those of the Trinity Choir in celebrating LaVerne's life. Singers are asked to come to the choir room (located under the sanctuary) at12:45 pm on Thursday to assemble and rehearse. Those owning copies of the Requiem of Johannes Brahms are asked to bring them. Contributions in her memory may be made to the Trinity Presbyterian Church Music program. There was no other person who influenced my life and my voice like LaVerne. She was not only my teacher, and my mentor, but also a cherished friend. Although my life as a soprano took me away from Charlotte, whenever anyone would ask me how I learned to spin those pianissimos, I was thrilled to tell them about LaVerne. All who were at my wedding were blessed by experiencing her magnificent voice. She took my tenor-husband Vernon to her heart and encouraged him. He too cherishes this gifted lady. Our love and prayers are with you all. How we wish we could have shared in the celebration of her life. My life will always be full of joy and my heart full of song because I was fortunate enough to know LaVerne. She was more than a voice; she was a treasure!

My sympathies to the Roberts family. I had a great visit with her about a year and a half ago when I stopped by looking for Rob.

I would cry every time she sang. I am going to miss those moments so much. I love you LaVerne.

Congratulations to Laverne for the dramatic and different 4 kids she guided. Tall, talented, tough, and tolerant are each of the 4 to this day. Just like their mom. Michael Wood, Cincinnati.

Dear Roberts "Kids",
You don't know me, but your Mom and Dad were important in my life in the "50's" when I babysat for Michael and Gordon, sorry I didn't know the rest of you. Your dear Mom sang in my wedding also. She had such a beautiful voice and was a wonderful woman! I was able to visit them in Charlotte some years ago, since my sister lives in Davidson, and it was great connecting after so many years.
My thoughts and prayers are with you all. My prayers are with you and may the memories you have bring you comfort.
