"I will be strong and courageous. I will not be terrified or discouraged. For the Lord my God is with me wherever I go Joshua 1:9. United States of America one nation under God." Matthew Paul Dale Reed, age 31, of Mount Airy, the youngest son born to Rev. Rusty and Judy Reed on February 3, 1984, died December 25, 2015 peacefully at home. He was a graduate of Mount Airy High School in 2002. Matt was a kind loving son and friend always willing to help others. He was a born again Christian who loved the Lord, and was a member of Fancy Gap Baptist Church. He served in the United States Army in Iraq from 2004 to 2007. He was disabled due to combat related injuries occurring in Iraq during 2006. Even though he was home in the United States, his heart was in Iraq wanting to help that country to be a better place for the Iraqi people. He served in the 414th Calvary 172 Stryker Brigade combat Team. He is survived by his parents, Rev. Rusty and Judy Jones Reed; his sister and brother-in-law, Leslie and Jarrett Combs; a brother, Billy Reed and fiancé Lindsi Dowell; a special friend Heather Cobler; an uncle, Jimmy Jones; and numerous cousins. Matthew was preceded in death by his grandparents, Joe and Susan Reed and Gray and Hattie Jones; an uncle, Billy Gray Jones, an aunt, Linda Reed Ramey and a very special dog, Lucy. "He loved his family, he loved his fellow soldiers and he loved serving in the United States Army". Mr. Reed also loved his coaches, Kelly Holder, Chris Johnson, Donald Price, and all of his teammates. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, January 2, 2016, at Antioch Baptist Church and will be conducted by Mr. Jarrett Combs, Mr. Chris Fleming and Sergeant Eric Sheehan. The family will receive friends at the church beginning at 12:30. Burial will follow in the Shelton Church of the Brethren Cemetery with military rites by VFW Memorial Honor Guard Mt. Airy Post 2019 & Pilot Mountain Post 9436. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Wounded Warrior Project, 4899 Belfort Road, Suite 300, Jacksonville, FL 32256. The family would like to thank everyone for the love and kindness during this tremendous time of sadness. We know our son is in heaven with the Savior he loved. 2 Timothy ~ "I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith." Therefore laid up for me is a crown of righteousness." Online condolences may be made at www.moodyfuneralservices.com.
