John Harrington Obituary

John Joseph (Jack) Harrington

July 21, 1934 - September 18, 2023

John Joseph (Jack) Harrington died on September 18, 2023 at St. Patrick's Hospital in Missoula with close family by his side.

Jack was born on July 21, 1934 in Butte, MT to John C. and Ann Harrington. He attended the Immaculate Conception grade school and then both Butte Central and Butte High Schools as an avid football and baseball player.

After high school Jack became an apprentice electrician in the IBEW and was employed by the City of Butte and worked under his father.

Jack married Carol Holman and had one son, John. Jack and Carol later divorced.

Jack was soon drafted in the Army where he was deployed to Germany and played baseball for the Kaiserslautern Engineers.

After his two years in the Army, Jack returned to his job in Butte as the City Electrician for the Butte Fire Department. He continued to play in the Copper League playing baseball for the Silver Bow Parks and the McQueen Club. His accomplishments in baseball were pitching two no-hitters, winning a championship with the Parks and defeating the House of David traveling baseball team as a member of the Copper League.

Jack was also a 65 year member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. In his younger days, Jack enjoyed running 10K races, skiing with his son at many different ski areas and playing handball with many of his closest friends at the Butte Elks. He also enjoyed a cold brew with many of his companions at the Quarry Brewery. Jack expressed an influential statement at the time just before passing, "I'm OK, I lived a very good life and had a great time, its just my time to go."

Jack is preceded in death by his mother, Ann Harrington; father, John C. Harrington and brother, Robert Harrington.

Jack is survived by his son, John (Gigi) Harrington of Omaha; brother, Patrick Harrington of Butte; grandchildren: Justin (Angela) Harrington of Omaha, Alysha Harrington of Omaha, Jayden and John John Harrington of Omaha; great-grandchildren: Talon, Prym and Julian of Omaha, nieces and nephews: Joey (Heather) Harrington of Portland, Shelly (Steve) Burke of Sheridan, Sherry (Jerry) Stewart of Butte, PJ Harrington of AK, Angie Harrington of Wilmington, NC and Chris Harrington of Minneapolis, MN.

Jack's funeral will be October 26, 2023 11:00 a.m. at St. Ann's Church, with a reception to follow for family and friends at the KC.

John: I am very sorry to hear of your father's passing. Our childhood neighborhood and Butte were a better place because of Jack Harrington. I'm here in Butte this weekend and will spend time on the neighborhood corner saying a prayer for our father and family. As I do I know I will smile and laugh as so many great memories arise. "Danny" Clague.

My sincere sympathies to you all. Loved listening to Mr. Harrington´s stories about growing up in Butte and his jokes. Your Dad thought the world of his grandchildren and would tell me how smart they are.
Mr. Harrington you will be dearly missed and I´ll miss your friendship.
