Taylor Olson Obituary

Taylor Olson, 40, of Butte, Montana, passed away peacefully on September 10, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.

Taylor was born on January 26, 1985, in Butte to Merle and Melissa Olson. He graduated from Whitehall High School in 2003 and earned his bachelor's degree in Industrial Engineering from Montana State University in 2008 and his master's degree in Project Engineering and Management from Montana Technological University in 2015, both with honors.

Taylor built an illustrious career at Northwestern Energy where he applied his natural technical abilities. On November 3, 2018, he married his college sweetheart, Patricia "Patty" Navarro Betancourt and the two created a beautiful life together filled with laughter, music and deep love. Taylor and Patty shared two English bulldogs – Ruby and Pearl – and Taylor was an attentive dog dad.

Taylor was a consummate self-taught musician, mastering five instruments in his life. He enjoyed countless hours playing on his own, jamming with friends, and partaking in live music. His passion for music was matched only by his love of the outdoors, where he found peace camping under Montana's big sky, biking scenic trails, and spending time boating on the water. He was particularly proud of his Jeep, which he lovingly maintained and modified, always ready for the next adventure.

One of Taylor's favorite things to do was make people laugh, and he was known for his quick-wit and infectious sense of humor. He was a voracious reader and his encyclopedic knowledge spanned every subject imaginable. His fascination with history, particularly Egyptian culture, made him a captivating conversationalist who could hold court for hours sharing interesting anecdotes and tidbits. Taylor loved life, people and most importantly, his family. His generous spirit, brilliant mind, and warm heart touched everyone who knew him.

Taylor is survived by his beloved wife, Patty Olson of Butte, Montana; his adoring parents, Merle and Melissa Olson of Whitehall, Montana; his cherished sister, Michaela Olson of Seattle, Washington, and dear friends. He was preceded in death by his grandparents Margaret Taylor, John Mazzola, Roger Olson and Darlene Olson.

A celebration of Taylor's life will be held on Wednesday, October 8, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Ann's Catholic Church, 2100 Farragut Ave, Butte, Montana. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. prior to the service.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Taylor's friend and doctor, Dr. Cole of Big Sky Diagnostic, Dr. Hueftle of the Community Hospital of Anaconda and all of their staff for the good care given to Taylor. In keeping with Taylor's love for animals, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Chelsea Bailey Butte Silver Bow Animal Rescue in lieu of flowers.

I worked with Taylor many years ago at NWE, he was breath of fresh air tha only he could have provided at the SOCC. As a young professional he was always willing to jump in where ever he was needed, including rearranging the office furniture at times. I looked forward to the times I would work with Taylor. Rest in peace my friend.

I can't believe my high school best friend has passed. It feels like we were just kids not that long ago. I will always remember the great memories with Taylor and his family and how we met and bonded over guitar and bass. My condolences Patty, Merle, Melissa, and Michaela. I am so sorry for your loss.

I worked with Taylor at NorthWestern Energy. Taylor worked in the System Operations Control Center (SOCC) and I worked in Generation. Shortly after we started the generating plant at Mill Creek, Taylor sent a graph showing we were meeting or exceeding his expectations. His note said: "Dusty - Hugs and Kisses from the SOCCs...Taylor Olson". That really meant a lot to me, and I still have his note hanging in my office at home. Taylor was a great person and will truly be missed.

As a teacher of 26 years, I've had a lot of great students, but Taylor was one of my favorites. Once I got hired at Northwestern energy, we talked a few times and reminisced about all his shenanigans at WHS! Prayers to his family.
