Richard "Dick" Carson McGill
LA QUINTA, California – Former Muscatine resident, Richard "Dick" Carson McGill, age 100, passed away on Saturday, September 6, 2025, at his residence in La Quinta, CA.
Dick was born March 14, 1925, in Muscatine, IA, the son of Paul and Edna McGill. He grew up and worked on a farm near Conesville, Iowa with his brother and sister. Shortly after graduating Conesville High School at the age of 18, he enlisted in the Navy during World War II and was chosen to be a rear gunner on a dive bomber. After his discharge, he moved to Panorama City, CA in 1948 where he married Martha Jane Ruthrauff. They had a daughter Marcia Anne McGill and a son Paul Douglas McGill. Dick told many stories about working nights at the Beverly Hills Hotel as a bellhop. He also began to pursue a career in real estate, eventually becoming a real estate agent and later a broker in Northridge, CA.
Dick loved to fly and become a commercial pilot with an instrument and flight instructors rating. Later in life, he took lessons and received his seaplane rating.
Dick was an avid golfer and belonged to Porter Valley Country Club in Northridge, CA. Aside from playing golf he also loved playing card games such as Gin Rummy and Poker at the clubhouse and with friends.
In the 1980's, Dick was a real estate agent in Muscatine, IA at Coder Real Estate. He loved golfing at Geneva Golf and Country Club in Muscatine and Crow Valley Country Club in Davenport, IA.
Dick loved to fish and spent many years fishing in Canada with friends and family. He especially loved to catch Northern Pike.
In 1989, he moved to La Quinta, CA where he was married to Mary Lynn Smith-McGill. They resided at PGA West Stadium Course where they were members, and he continued working as a real estate broker from home known as "RC McGill & Associates". He worked as a broker most of his life and received an award from the community in recognition of years of service.
He is survived by his wife, Mimi McGill; son, Paul McGill; stepdaughter, Shelley Holland; grandson, Shawn Bates; step-grandson, Derick Holland; sister, Ruth Cryder, and many great-grandchildren and great great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Edna McGill; daughter, Marcia McGill; brother, Robert McGill; ex-wife, Martha McGill; and grandson, Richard Bates.
As a self-proclaimed optimist Dick was warm, witty and kind and his gregarious personality touched the lives of many who knew him personally and in business. He had a great sense of humor with a distinct boisterous laugh and told many interesting and funny stories. As some who called him by his nickname "Dickie" his presence will be sorely missed but his memory will be forever cherished and never forgotten.
