Shirley J. Schafnit, 95, of Davenport, died Monday, May 6, 2024, at Genesis East Medical Center, Davenport.

A funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, May 17, 2024, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Davenport. Visitation will be from 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. Thursday, May 16, 2024, at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home and Crematory, 3030 7th Avenue, Rock Island. Inurnment will take place at Oakdale Cemetery, Wilton, IA.

Memorials may be made in care of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Davenport, Putnam Museum Guild or the Humane Society of Scott County.

Shirley was born in Muscatine, IA, on September 24, 1928, a daughter of Raymond and Hazel McIntire Geertz. She married Ronald Schafnit on June 12, 1949 in West Liberty, IA. He preceded her in death on September 14, 2013.

Shirley worked as a secretary for many years in the Davenport Community Schools, retiring in 1988.

She was a very active member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Davenport, where she participated in the choir, WELCA and volunteered in the office and library. She enjoyed the Putnam Museum where she was a member of the Putnam Museum Guild. She was also an advocate for and enjoyed the Quad City Symphony Orchestra. Shirley thoroughly loved going to watch the Handel Oratorio at Augustana College with her family around the holidays.

Those left to cherish her memory include her son, Mark Schafnit; grandson, James Schafnit; a niece, a nephew and many cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son, Daniel Schafnit; and brother, Kenneth Geertz.
