Robert Rutgers Obituary

Robert "Bob" John Rutgers, 84, lifelong Lynden resident, went to be with his Lord and Savior on August 7, 2025 after a couple years of health issues. He is remembered for giving nicknames to people and lively humor. Bob was born on December 31, 1940 in Bellingham, Washington to Bert and Nellie (Zuidmeer) Rutgers. He attended Lynden Christian Schools through the tenth grade until his father's passing in 1956, after which he left school to assist with responsibilities on the family farm. He enjoyed keeping in touch with his classmates and attending various activities and class reunions. Bob married Karen Vander Pol on December 2, 1960. In 1967 they purchased property which included a small raspberry field. Over the course of many years, they continued to cultivate that property. He also worked for over 45 years for Whatcom Builders as an asphalt paver. He earned the nickname of "Puddles" during that time. At retirement he was given a golden shovel. Bob and Karen enjoyed many years camping to Leavenworth and later at their cabin in Birch Bay. He was a lifelong member of Second Christian Reformed Church. Bob is preceded in death by his parents, wife Karen in 2022 and sister Janice in 2011. Bob is survived by his sons Scott (Melanie) and Todd (Cheri), grandchildren Nicole Rutgers, Hannah Rutgers, Brittany (Chris) Leach and Brianna (Micah) Bonewell, and great grandchildren Ember, Daxton and Saylor Leach. He will be greatly missed by his sister Carol May, brothers Dale (Femmie) Rutgers and Gerald (Tammy) Rutgers, nieces, nephews, many friends and community members. The family wishes to thank Dr. John Hiemstra, Selas and staff at T & A Adult Family Home and Eden Hospice for their compassionate care. Memorials may be sent in Robert's name to Starfish Ministries or Lynden Christian Schools. Viewing will be held on Sunday, August 17, 2025, from 3:00-5:00 pm at Gillies Funeral Home. Private family burial is Monday, August 18 at 10:15 am at Monumenta Cemetery followed by an 11:00 am memorial service at Second Christian Reformed Church. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Gillies Funeral Home and Cremation Services.

Sherri Willand

August 19, 2025

We were saddened to hear of Bob´s passing. My dad, Joe, met Bob at Lynden Christian Care Center - a place I don't think either of them expected to find joy. But Bob was an instant friend, and the two quickly bonded over shared memories and mutual friends from their younger days.

We were grateful to see their friendship continue at Lynden Manor, where they shared meals and many more conversations. Bob was a light to my dad during a chapter of life that isn´t always easy, and we are truly thankful for the companionship they shared.

We are deeply sorry for your loss and are holding your family in our prayers.

Sincerely,

Sherri Willand (Joe's daughter)
