I still have so many fond thoughts of Tony. His kindness and quick wit will be remembered by many ex-students and players, for a very long time. Tony's unbelievable memory of each and every person he met was such a gift. It made us all feel special in his eyes. God Bless, may we someday meet again.

Tony was my mentor, big brother, coach, and most importantly, my friend. I am shocked to hear of his passing and sad that so many people will miss his guidance and teachings. Tony will always be my role model. May God Bless. Wayne Gray

I was so fortunate to have Mr. Nieman in seventh grade for social studies, language arts, a marking period when he taught journalism and for homeroom.

One of the best and creative social studies teachers I ever had in school. He made social studies interesting and fun and had the most caring personality. I went into teaching and teach social studies due to Mr. Nieman. Kept in touch with Mr. Nieman over the years as he was a mentor to me as a fellow teacher and as a friend.

One of the best teachers ever at Joyce Kilmer School. May he rest in peace. Sending my thoughts and prayers to his wife and family during this difficult time.

Mr. Nieman was my father's colleague at Joyce Kilmer School in Milltown. My dad and he were good friends too. He gave so much of himself to other people's children both his students and even me and my brothers. Without him I would never have known some aspects of myself that only seem to come alive when he on so many occasions let our family stay at his cabin in Maine. What a great man. I will miss our conversations that we had up to shortly before he crossed.

Mr. Nieman was one of the most influential, if not the most, teachers in my life, and one of the greatest educators I have ever known. He gave me a love for reading the classics and his kindness and genuine concern for students changed my life. An amazing man that truly made a significant difference for me, and many, many other Milltowners. My condolences to his family, the world lost a great one.

Me. Nieman was my teacher in Joyce Kilmer and was one of my favorites. I remember him being funny and kind and someone that made learning fun. It is clear that teaching was a true calling for him and he impacted so many lives in a positive way, including mine.

I specifically remember him giving me two tickets to a Yankees game. This was my first baseball game, against the Red Sox and, to this day, I remember that game so vividly, especially because it was the first game with my dad.

Rest in piece and thank you, Mr. Nieman.

I was a class mate of Tony in NBHS classof 1959.
My children Billy, Diane and David Petry had him as their teacher at Joyce Kilmer School. My grand children also had him there. They always spoke highly of him. I would sometimes see him there when I worked at the school’s SACC program.
My daughter talked to him when they were patients at the same place several times each week. She was shocked when she did not see him last Tuesday.
He was a good man and a great teacher.
I have posted his obituary and the picture from our NBHS yearbook on Facebook.
He will surely be missed !
Sending our condolences to the family.
May God bless you all, Barbara (Mundy) Petry and Family

There are a few teachers that leave a lasting impression on you. Mr. Nieman was one of them. He taught us that history is more than just names and dates. Wonderful teacher!
