Darrah Laing Obituary
AGE: 19 • Island Heights
Darrah S. Laing, age 19, of Island Heights, died Saturday, Feb. 20, 2016. Born in Toms River she was a lifelong resident of Island Heights. Darrah attended Island Heights Grade School, was a graduate of Central Regional High School's class of 2014, and was currently attending Ocean County College.
Darrah, known to her friends as Queen D, was an independent woman who was passionate about her causes. She loved reading and music; she was a fashionista and a self-taught make-up artist. She was a loyal friend and loved spending time with her family and family friends. Darrah's early life was shaped by receiving one of the earliest living-donor liver transplants and she whole-heartedly supported organ-donation.
She is survived by her parents Josh and Laurie Laing; her sister Abby; her maternal grandparents Patricia & Peter Casey; paternal grandparents Bonney Parker, and Chuck & Lynn Laing. She is also survived by many loving aunts, uncles and cousins.
Visitation will be held Friday, Feb. 26, 2016, from 2:00-4:00 PM and 7:00-9:00 PM at the Anderson & Campbell Funeral Home, 703 Main Street, Toms River, NJ. Funeral Services will be held Saturday, 10:00 AM at Island Heights Methodist Church. Burial will follow at St. Joseph's Cemetery, Toms River. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate contributions be made in Darrah's memory to the Solid Organ Transplant department of the Nemours/ Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children. Contributions should be mailed to: The Nemours Fund for Children's Health, Shands House, 1600 Rockland Rd., Wilmington, DE 19803. As you all know, Darrah was born very sick. Thanks to prayers, a skilled surgical team and her Aunt Kathy, she was able to not only survive, but thrive. During Darrah's life we had the great pleasure of watching her take her first steps, listen to her laugh and watch her play. We were able to see her make lasting friendships, enjoy time with her cousins and family, form an everlasting bond with Abby, and fall in love. She blossomed into a beautiful woman with very strong independent thoughts and opinions, who enjoyed a good argument and coming to the defense of any group she felt was being oppressed. Darrah liked to push the envelope in a lot of ways and was able to experience many things, sometimes earlier than we had wished, but maybe that was because her time here with us was going to be a little less than others. Darrah was able to very eloquently put her thoughts and feelings into words before she passed. We would like to let everyone know, that even though the way she chose to leave us is hard to understand, she was not angry or resentful or lonely, she was just tired. We take comfort in knowing she had found an inner peace and was looking forward to living in heaven. We feel so blessed to have had Darrah with us for 20 more years than we thought we would. Please do Darrah the honor of remembering her beautiful sprit in positive ways and focus on the time you spent with her. She would love to know she could make you all smile while you think of some fun memory you have of her. We love you all and so does Darrah from above.

I knew Darrah throughout elementary school. She always knew how to brighten up a room and make everyone laugh.
